Re: What are the most reliable storage devices for long-term data backup?
What's your time horizon? Years? Decades? If it's just years you could do hot-cold backups with HDDs. If you want real archival (whole system) you'll be looking at LTO tapes. The tapes themselves are cheap however the drives are expensive. Magnetic tape can hold half a petabyte. This medium is ...

Re: Do you even lift?
I hit a 405 (183.7kg) squat back in November 2023. I've been on the diet from Hell since 2024. Started at 230lb (104.3kg) bodyweight trying to get down to 195(88.5kg). I am my own worst enemy. Best I've done benching is 285(~129kg).

Re: Project: Bootstrap
So, I ended up getting an LSI 9305-16i on ebay from Rhino Technology Group for about $70. Wasn't flashed but after finding LSIUtil on github made flashing a breeze. Super easy to use on Linux or Windows. The most annoying thing was finding the firmware on Broadcom's website. Definitely need to put a ...

Re: Project: Bootstrap
Well I learned something I'm not thrilled about. The motherboard is SATA only. Unless I go with an HBA (and looking at the price of a lsi 9305-16i I'm not willing to spend another $250 just yet) I'll be stuck with SATA drives. For most of my use cases I think it'll be OK. I think I'm going to look ...

Re: Project: Bootstrap
A little bit of an update. I ended up compromising on the CPU. Instead of getting a 64 core Epyc 7702 I found a 32 core Epyc 7532 for $200. I'd rather save $400 and put that towards enterprise spinning rust/enterprise ssds. Not to mention the 7532 does have a higher base clock speed. I ended up ...

Re: Project: Bootstrap
ZFS RAIDZ vdev expansion is now a feature: https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/releases
Of course there is a downside:
After the expansion completes, old blocks remain with their old data-to- parity ratio (e.g. 5-wide RAIDZ2, has 3 data to 2 parity), but distrib‐ uted among the larger set of disks. New ...

Re: Project: Bootstrap
Well, I kind of screwed up. I ordered the Fractal Meshify 2. Not the Meshify 2 XL. I lose 4 bays, but in Server Configuration I still get 14 drive bays instead of 18. Holy crap is this a great case. I wish I'd spent the money in 2019 for a Fractal case. Don't get me wrong my Phanteks P400 case is a ...

Re: Project: Bootstrap
I definitely want a SAS board for the options of going either SAS or SATA. I like options. However it seems that the two headers would only let me connect to 8 drives. I'd still need an HBA (they aren't that expensive on ebay). I can get an LSI 9400-16i for about $100. Older are about half that ...

Project: Bootstrap
So I've been wanting to build a really powerful All-In-One VM server/homelab. I've wanted to do this for a good 4 or 5 years at this point. I've been making due with dockers in my Synology 918+, but I've run into some un-solveable issues unless Synology updates their ancient linux kernel (4.4.302 ...

Reddit is about to go the way of Digg
I really haven't been paying attention to Reddit news other than to say that Reddit is probably about to have an IPO rug pull moment. Yesterday logging into Reddit Is Fun on my phone I got a notification that changes to the Reddit API ( they're going to be charging exorbitant prices for access to ...

Re: pfSense Build 2.0
I give up. I've had hell with the Asrock J4125B-ITX board. It would boot and sometimes on reboot it would hang or go into a boot loop. To make it worse there have been no BIOS updates since the initial on Asrock's site. I think instead I'm going to support the opnsense project and buy an Opnsense ...

Problems, Problems and More Problems
This project has become a huge pain in the ass. So I got new RAM and installed it. I installed pfSense, however I kept running into issues. Booting and rebooting would hang. I think it has something to do with UEFI BIOS. I still can't nail down a reason. Then I ...

Issues with this build
This build has been a test in patience. So I last left off with the PSU not fitting. I got the new Flex PSU (250 Watt) and it fits in the case perfectly. So I plugged in the RAM, NIC, connected to HDMI and...mothing. Borrowed a VGA cable from a friend and still nothing. I ...

Repository of Server Information
Hello all,
I figured since I've gotten quite a list of sites I've used for my projects (pfSense, home network, and future planned VM/NAS server).
Serve The Home - Contrary to what you might think the name means, it actually means the /home directory of a linux server. This website is primarily ...
