Put the installation CD of XP or Windows 2000 into the CD drive assembly and start the computer again. It should soon say "Press a key to start from CD".

If not, you have to change the boot sequence in the computer´s BIOS.
With the first screen of the setup program select "R" to enable the repair

Now you get a command line interface. now type the command "format", followed by the drive letter like

format c:

The system will then format the drive with the same file system type that the drive already has.
hope this helps

Or instead of repair you could just continue with a new installation and format it and reinstall the Operating System at the same time.

About what you said "files that are needed", if you mean your own files you should make a backup on a cd or something before you do all this. Because EVERYTHING on the HDD will be lost.

How I clean my C:

1. I get into Add/Remove and then I remove everything I don't use anymore.
2. I get in my torrent folder and delete all my .iso and all the junk I already burned
3. I back-up my music and keep only the one I listen to at the momment.
4. I back-up my video and delete them
5. I get into c: and uninstall all the junk I don't use anymore
6. Run Spybot Search and Destroy in case of adware
7. Run Adaware
8. Clean all my junk from my desktop.
9. Run a registry cleaner to clean all the mess all my uninstall/erase stuff could have done.
