The slow internet blues... Please help

Ok so my computer on average gets 500 to 750kbs down speed and 65kbs up... Over night without any configurations it has dropped down to 30kbs down and 5kbs up..... I am completely stumped... I have no idea how this could happen... And I know its not my windows being shitty windows because its the same on my xp and Suse...... Could it be my modem and if so what kind of configurations do I need to perform........ Any help would be appreciated. Even links to other sources will make me happy... P.S. Im useing Shaw High speed.

clean cach and all other crap set open ports to 50 and so on but if its dsl they controll your speed and have heard many times of DSL users being limited for days or night or other certain hours

Thanks man but Ive done that all.... Sucks becouse I run some servers off this computer... I tried calling shaw and they were like Sorry man its my first day....... Whats linux? god I hate it when they hire people like that for those jobs

Is there any free ISPs that run on broad band that get better then 30 kila bytes a second?? one that I can use temporarily..... At least untill this is fixed.... I have Win xp and Suse linux faster internet for either will be nice.

anyway, where are you looking to see that it has dropped? It doesn't have to mean that your comp is at fault, so try doing a speedtest, like this one: http://www.speedtest.net/

yep, do a speedtest like cats said, if it shows a slow rate and there are no connections from/to your computer that eat bandwidth (check with netstat) you can try it again after replacing the network cables, maybe one is damaged.
if it all fails it can be caused by your ISP like Opp said, some ISPs limit the bandwidth at specific times (usually small providers) and/or they limit the bandwidth because you maybe have caused a lot of traffic via filesharing for example. so ask the ISP support...

Everyone got the right ideas.
Don't forget peak time, the isp might not have any control over the issue (unless they build a bigger network!). You say it was in the evening - thats when people get home from work- and go online.

Yah guess what I found out it was......... My land lord told me when I moved in we had high speed.... Dident tell me shaw was only giveing us a free trail of high speed...... Yah so apparently I'm on light... I told the land lord about it and he let me know what was going on........ So light comes included with the rent but if I want high speed I need to pay the bill.... Yah fun... So now I need to think about if I have the money and if not if I can afford to make any cuts to other stuff.... Thanks for all the help guys..... Bloody landlord makeing me feel like a retard..........
