REALLY frustraing Microsoft Office problem...

Whenever I go to start any of the applications associated with Microsoft Office, i.e. Excel, Access, Word etc. the setup bootstrapper loads up, and i have to manually stop it. Once I quit the setup (despite the fact that Office is already fully intalled) the relevant program then starts.

This applies in the following situations:

1) If I attempt to open a document associated with that program.
2) I try to open the relevant program itself, directly.

It is highly annoying to say the least.

What version of office is this with...... Office XP. My guess this a backup copy you are using and it keeps asking for the disc? If so then i would say this is a bad duplicate

I have had this happen before and found that i didn't need to uninstall but just let the bootstrap run with a clean copy of Office and this should fix what is probably missing or corrupt files.

i have had this problem before with autocad.

the way i fixed it was with a tool called windows installer cleanup, it is
a tool from microsoft.

Office XP? Unplug your internet connection while its installing, it will try and send a packet after install the first time back to MS

So right after install, make sure internet is unplugged then run one of the programs and make sure it does not auto update or get anything from the net, then you should be good

I think the problem is, this is a unlicensed version of Office?

So, anytime you connect to the internet, the MS software will ET (phone home). It is a process to detect unlicense versions of OS and MS apps, to inform on you (to at least let MS know how many unlicensed software is out there) and it is suspected that it transmits commands to disable the unlicensed software. I have tried blocking MS communications, but I think the OS hides it in the http traffic while online - so you can't really firewall it. You can bet if you are a large enterprise running unlicensed software you'll be contacted by their legal dept demanding payment for copyright vio.
