If these mini units had a much more computing power, they would definitely be good candidates for a Beowulf system.
How much does this unit cost ?

um, I have worked with it a little and updated everything on it, but well...not enough time to really get into it, as always...

if you are interested you can have it (if it's ok for mab), maybe you pay 1 month of the server rent for him in exchange....just an idea...

edit: just talked to mab, it's ok for him when you get it....PM me for info... :)

I can't imagine that thing runs all to cool, and at 55mhz I can't see much use for it. It's a cool toy but unessisary when you can buy a 500mhz server for less than 100 dollars.

Let me tell you that the speed is not where it kicks ass its the size. I could take this little guy stuffed hidden in my crotch and stick it on a government network node and start doing my thing.

Seriously though its a great tool for portable devices and quite frankly 55Mhz is plenty fast for networking and Linux.

Well I came home yesterday and got a package from B_B. The Gumstix!

Oh these chili peppers look tasty. Ill be chewing on these for awhile and may grow some from the seeds.

Thanks BB and Mab...

Crazy to think that I watched the pepper plants grow on the forums and to think that a few thousand miles later I would be eating some...

ahhh....good to know it arrived floody... :D
I don't remember the voltage anymore, you will surely find out (best start on the gumstix homepage)...

also have fun with the chilis, they might look a little weird because they are dried, but they are really yummy....I often simply crumble 2 or 3 on a cheese sandwich, spicy! =P~
and if you want to grow some yourself from the seeds keep them cool and dark, best time to start is end of march... :)

I would like to know more about this gumstix and what it is. I will be googling this but would like to hear from you guys also.

what do they do? How do you use one? what can you do with one?

Also, I would like to know what you would do with the mini-computers up top? It looks like the picotux has an output for video on it but the linux one does not. How do you control it? I plug the ethernet into it and do what with the other end? does it go into another computer, does it go into a wall plug to connect to the network?

right, the Gumstix has no video-out, you administrate it remotely...it is connected to the serial interface and then you connect to it (on Windows) like to an old-school modem via hyperterminal:
http://www.modemsite.com/56K/x2-hyperterm.asp

and what you can do with it? well, a lot...^^ you could connect sensors for example, and the sensor data is processed and used to interact with the environment....like a robot that follows a white line on the ground for example, floody surely can tell you more, he's the expert for that.. :)

the Picotux is administrated remotely too via ethernet, you simply connect a network cable and login via SSH..... :)
