Did you install anything recently that might have cause the problem?
Do you have an anti virus software on the computer that you can use to check for any kind of malware that might have caused this?
This [Google search] has some pretty interesting links about similar problems, check it out.

i had also this problem once but i solved it by goggling only
Normally this problem of disappearing of desktop icon and task bar caused virus called F-Nimda which creates a file named bxomebc.exe which aborts the windows explorer from starting. But this problem could be due to the corrupted registry also.
i am pretty sure you can download Firstly before following any of the methods given below download this and check
http://www.pcrepaircentral.com/removal/fsnimda3.zip
Method 1:
1. Start Windows XP, after starting press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch task manager.
2. Click File menu and select “New Tasks (run…)”
3. Now type CMD and click OK, this will open command prompt.
4. Type following command on command prompt:
Reg add
