Also download Spybot search and destroy. Download it from cnet or similar and not from the spybot site. A link for the download here
I also recommend running Malwarebytes which can be downloaded here.
Also run ccleaner quite regularly and also uninstall the ask tool bar.CCleaner can be downloaded here
you may still have to run a hijack this log scan afterwards to remove the rest of the left over files from the toolbar.

Hope this helps
Why would he not download it from the original site? Just curious.
It wouldn't be the first time that i have seen the sites diverted and quite often to the ask.com pages. I have found it easier to connect to 3rd part sites who host the software rather than the original site. I am not saying for sure but sometimes it is like the malware diverts from certain sites like AV sites and adware cleaning sites, where sites like google, news etc can be accessed without any problem.

Can you install and post a log file from hijack this
Make sure you have removed the software with add/remove. You will easily see them as added tool bars. Only keep the toolbars you need and use so if you have any more like yahoo or mysearch then remove them too.

In case you want to analyze some of that on your own. Try the website given below.

Code: Select all

As for the website diversion issue, try checking the windows HOSTS file, you can find it in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Just open it with notepad. It should look like this:

Code: Select all

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...
