Post by l0ngb1t »

i need to transfer a big file to a friend
and internet is only way
uploading the file is an impossible option

so i thought i setup an FTP server at home, is it possible without leasing an IP ?
i know it;s risky and all those thing
but i need it...
so any idea on what to use and what vulnerability have to cover to make more secure
any tut's ? i appreciate any help ...

as long as your provider don't do forced re-connects that would interfere with the download (mine does every 24 hours for example) it's no problem.

I don't know which OS you want to use, in Windows there is an on-board ftp server (at least on XP, don't know about Vista or 7), but I recommend to use the Filezilla server instead:
http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server
make sure to check the documentation....don't worry, it's really simple.

another option would be to run a Linux live distro, Damn Small Linux for example comes with an ftp server:
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

if you run a "real" Linux system there are plenty of ftp clients available, but proftpd should be in the repositories for pretty any distro, documentation about the setup can be found on the proftpd homepage http://www.proftpd.org/ and specific for your distro on http://www.howtoforge.com/

about the security: if you don't want to run the server permanently anyway there is not much you have to care about, just make sure to disallow anonymous logins.

thank you B_B :D:D

and btw my ISP do a forced re=connect each 3 hours :X:X:X so i'll have to synchronize it with my friend...
and yeah i'll need it for just a file so i don't think it's a huge threat
thank you again

you usually can't connect to your own public IP, try either 127.0.0.1 or ask a buddy to try from the outside...also make sure to adjust router- and firewall-settings if neccessary...
