Workstations, virtualization, possible scenario Help?

Post by eppik »

So picture this scenario:

You have a company. You have about 10 workstations connected to a main server (lets forget about the hardware requirements and whatnot)

Now lets say that you wanted, instead of 10 Workstations, that the server would host 10 virtual machines, to get less power consumption and more desk space.

How would you go about this. Is it possible to do it without having a PC running on each workplace (just a screen, mouse and keyboard (possibly some USB Ports)
If so, how?

NOTE: (Users would be using it for Word, Excel, Accounting SW, No graphic or CPU Intensive uses) All users need to be able to work simultaneously as well.

I heard about VMware but not sure how clients are supposed to access the virtual machines on the server

Remote desktop software on the virtual machines, thin clients at the user end connecting to the remote desktops.

Thin client

So yeah, you'll still need computers, just smaller and less expensive ones.

As I feared. So any Idea if VMware will do the trick?

Definitions:
- VMWare is a program that can create and run virtual machines.
- The trick: running virtual machines

By the definition of VMware and the trick, yes, VMware will do the trick.

Seriously though I haven't used VMware, only VirtualBox and I love it very much.

So Can other , for example, 10 users on the LAN use 10 virtual machines at once from their workplace (with a pc in each of their desks?)
