Sandboxing
Today i read about this term 'sandboxing' for the first time. I guess its a term for isolating a running code and not letting it do any changes outside a specified area.
Do you guys use this method. I assume its a program. Google search gave me a program called 'sandboxie'.
I am trying to run a piece of software that has a malicious code on it combined with a useful program.
Let me know what you think.

Re: Sandboxing
This sounds like a type of virtual computer? Nothing new perhaps the name has changed. Just software that acts as a type of operating system, if I can use that analogy. You know, where you can execute code without it affecting your system.

Hak5 had an episode about sandbox applications, maybe you'll be interested to see:

Thanks for the link. Had to skip the first 8 minutes... it was painful to watch, but they did a good job comparing the programs later on.
Judging by the video, Sandboxie is definitely something i want to experiment with.

Re: Sandboxing
I personaly love sandboxie. Hak5 is really biased in that, (Maybe investors.) The point of sandboxie is that you make the decision to sandbox what you want, and not what you don't want. It also lets you choose when to delete the old sandbox. All executed scirpt is placed in the sandbox and never touches your computer past that. If you choose to save a file, well ya, it's going to let you. It assumes your not a tard who's going to run something that could be an infrction outside of a sandbox and doesn't force you into anything.

Re: Sandboxing
Sandbox is cool but vwmare is da shit. If not vwmare then try virtualbox.
We will either find a way, or make one.

i have been using sandboxie or a month now and so far so good. I can believe i didn't know about this method before. I am sure it is not 100% proof but i ll take my chances.
Thanks for the suggestions for other programs! I will try them out in the future.

I personally like virtualbox myself I have six different operating systems that I play with and if I screw one up it does not affect the main os.

Re: Sandboxing
Noop, sandboxie is usually used to run software, music, files and etc by not allowing them to change any registry settings while virtual box is used to install guest OS in your existing host OS for more info you can check about it here http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?Broken Angel wrote:Wad Crashacid... u trying to nail someone

Re: Sandboxing
from my experience playing around with malicious code, running it in a sandbox is not enough. there's too much out there that either won't run in a sandbox or will manage to bust its way through the sandbox walls.
(unless it's your own code and you know its behavior)
virtualbox under linux WITHOUT guest additions is the way to go
