Weird topology!!!!

Post by l0ngb1t »

ok my ISP has changes his logical topology and setup a new different thing with new IP stes and bla bla bla...

now when my pc boot (ip configuration is set to obtain automatically ip address...) it try's to get an ip but it fails and i can tell that because i get this one 169.254.60.210 witch is the limited IP address in windows and it is set when the connection to the DHCP is failed...

now i connect normally and in the connection configuration the IP's are 172.24.36.241
and what really freak's me out is the subnet mask witch is 255.255.255.255
i mean where is the host portion in this IP...
or if each host is considered as a network witch is as ind of security measure....
this is the result of my ipconfig command:

Code: Select all

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
        Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.60.210
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.1
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

PPP adapter connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.24.36.241
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

I have seen this many many times before and with the experience i have had with it is the router is either on its way out or it needs the firmware updating. Try a different router or a direct connection if you can and see if this gets you a connection.

def. a router problem since there is no default gateway assignment for the ethernet adapters.

no it's not a problem, because simply the connection is working perfectly
the default gateway solved, it is set.
and i re-thought about the 255.255.255.255 mask and it is not big deal, it simply means that am the only host in the network, it's for security reason so i can't see other hosts on the network.... (each host is in a different network)
