the telco box on the side of your house can also be called the NID, Network Interface Device. As phone networks go digital, it needs this device, to protect the digital network, and translate perhaps from old phones(?) still using analog signals.

The NID can be an old simple punch board

or more complex, with splitters, filters, and maybe the DSL/cable modem equipment.

All you need is a phone jack the lil RJ-11
