[python] socket programming

Can any one explain to me more about sockets (python module socket). I'm not being able to grasp the main concept. I've never worked with socket module before.
And one more thing, when entering the router interface via browser, what are the connection types ? how is the connection established ? It seems there is nothing about this topic on the internet.
Is it possible to access the router interface with a python script ? Or at least establish this connection with a python script. In other words, the same process established on the web browser, can i do it with python ?
