Linux Gaming

Post by ayu »

Let's use this thread to list good naive games for Linux, as well as good games on Windows that work on Linux.

Guild Wars 2

I'm currently playing this on my home machine, and it's going pretty ok.
If you disable GLSL, set video memory to 2048 and use low graphical settings in the game, it runs pretty ok on about 30 FPS.

Specs:

Code: Select all

Ubuntu 12.04 x64
Nvidia drivers 304.51
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT
Intel i5
4 GB RAM
Wine 1.5.14

Seeing as this game is so popular, I'm pretty sure support for it will become bigger soon.

World of goo
I downloaded the demo for World of goo yesterday on ubuntu, and it works out of the box with native binaries.
No more description needed really.

Warzone 2100
A real time strategy game for Linux (native).
The graphics are pretty basic, as well as the effects, but the game runs very well and is very entertaining.
Good for those who like sci-fi RTS games and don't have much power in the machine :)

0 A.D
Another RTS for Linux, looks a lot like Age of Empires, but it's native Linux and open source.
If you liked Age of Empires, then you're going to love this :)

OpenRA
Open source red alert / c&c clone (this is one of my favs).
Has a lot of neat features like playing against other players online, and it's all native Linux!

World of Warcraft - Mists of Panderia
Everything works using Wine including the downloader :-) was very easy to set up.

I can recommend PlayOnLinux as well for people who want something even more straight forward than Wine :)

There was a pack of games for Ubuntu "Humble Indie Bundle 5", but only Ubuntu users can install it through the software manager so far.

Yeah I saw that a few days ago and was going to install it, but the games don't look THAT good, so I skipped ^^
