Kali Linux - successor of Backtrack

Post by ph0bYx »

Got this in the Debian newsletter:
Raphaël Hertzog blogged [13] about the birth of Kali Linux 1.0 [14], a
new Debian derivative developed by Offensive Security to be an advanced
and stable penetration testing distribution.
Mati Aharoni, lead Kali developer, explained that "Debian provides a
reliable base to build a new distribution and yet can easily be
customized to add bleeding edge features, thanks to the unstable and
experimental distributions". Raphaël, who helped the Kali team in
setting up their technical infrastructure as a Debian derivative, also
added that not only will most Kali applications be integrated into
Debian, but Offensive Security is also willing to dedicate a node of
their armhf cluster for Debian's own use.

There doesn't seem to be a live cd boot. Maybe I'll try it in VB later.

I have Kali Linux installed with Dual boot with windows 7... I haven't used it much but it looks like a really decent security distribution. I believe there is a Live feature to it as well :-)

erm....never been a fan of BT, but now I understand even less than ever why someone should not get Debian right from the start and customize it for his needs... :-s

Although I think it's neat with distros like this (the more the merrier?), I completely agree with you.

well, of course, I am not saying "if you use BT you are stupid!"....I had really fun times with trying lots of different distros myself. and I really tried odd releases like KasterX (preconfigured live distro for Asterisk)...

I simply don't really understand the fuzz about BT....as live CD: ok, maybe. but as "real" OS it simply makes no sense to me.

I disagree, they are taking a Debian Distro and giving it a unique focus. Rather than staying mainstream. This often appeals to people who are specialized in this field/focus. I can understand the desire to set up your own system using a standard Debian distro. But how often do you guys do a full reinstall. If you had to set up everything on each reinstall, you would be pretty annoyed with it after some time.

My Opinion

I guess people don't like to go through the trouble of configuring and installing everything and want everything there from the start. I'm getting my WLAN antenna these days so I'm going to test out the security features of BT on that. And after I familiarized myself with all that I'm going to try and install and configure the programs that I will be using on Debian.

Do you guys think that BT would work via VirtualBox?

It works fine in VM, we played around with BT when I was in school, I'm not a big fan either. It seemed back when they populated the software list everything that could be or was ever a hacking tool was added, even if the tool was antiquated... the number of tools and lack of documentation could be a little overwhelming... Plus I thought the whole black/red/techno/hackery theme was a little much... er... silly.

Although I do see your point Mabs, it's nice to have a dump of tools the try before you buy, I think if there is an area of hacking that a person is interested in then they will explore the tools relevant to that area.

right lilrofl, I think besides the amount of unneeded software (I mean, come on, how many people do file carving for example? people who do surely don't use BT) the look was maybe the most annoying point for me.....it made the impression like it was made for "look, I am hacker!" showing off purposes and not for a professional workflow.

I have to agree with you guys on the way BT looks, but I guess that comes down to personal preferences. For example I like clean and minimal looks like the one I have now:

Although I'm pretty sure the BT look is appealing to the skiddie folk

Honestly I never used Backtrack until installing Kali and I agree it was the look that kept me away from at least investigating it.

But Kali seems to have adopted a new look and imo seems better. Actually I take back my initial statement I was just trying to play devils advocate LOL

I will agree, honestly I would just set up a Debian Distro and customize it myself. I don't like having things preconfigured for me :-)

But I will have to say seeing all the tools does give you some idea of whats out there. Tools you never heard of *shrugs

As for Documentation I think the Documentation should fall under the tool Developer. But that's my opinion :-)
