Debian restores open applications on boot [How to turn off]

Every time I reboot or boot up my system Debian will restore its open applications how can I disable this? It's a bit annoying. They are not programs designed to reboot at start up. Things like Firefox windows, shell terminals, skype and pidgin.

well, you can control the startup apps easily with rcconf (install it via apt-get), but when it's browsers and stuff then it is because those apps were running before you shut down the system and you have checked "save session" in the shutdown dialog.
so close the apps, then shut down...and they will not start anymore the next boot. in order not having to do that every time do it once and from then on uncheck "save session" when shutting down.
