[Solved] Command Line Runlevel 3

Post by ayu »

Ok so i am going to install some Nvidia drivers on a computer with Ubuntu 7.10

I go into the terminal and write

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

This is supposed to shutdown the X server, and it does.

But i don't get a command line... it simply stops at

"* Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)"

Anyone familiar with this issue and could help me?

EDIT: Solved!

The EXACT second i pushed the "POST" button, it continued and gave me the command line, after being frozen for like 10 minutes.

So if anyone can answer why it's so slow then go for it ^^

Have you tried asking on the Ubuntu IRC. That might help!
We will either find a way, or make one.

Ctrl alt backspace drops you into GUI login in Ubuntu, I think if you push it twice though it will drop you into the shell. I am being spoiled by Ubuntu, I think I am going to try Slackware or Gentoo next distro install on this puter.

I don't think it's a difference in distro's, just a difference in settings. If you're set up to boot into text mode, you startx and you hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, you go back to text mode. If you're set up to boot with a login manager like kdm, gdm or xdm and hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, you'd go back to that.

I think Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or it's disabling in xorg.conf has some kind of funny name related to it, but I'm not sure.

oh, right, that sounds logic...because I really boot into textmode and start X manually only if I need/want it. :)
