Most secure out of the box Linux

Post by pois0n »

I've been wanting to learn linux for a while, and recently my friend asked me to set up a website for a company he is starting. I figured this is a perfect opportunity to start learning, however I dont know much about html or php, or for that matter linux. So I was wondering what would you guys consider the most secure out of the box linux distro and a good distro to start with. The most ive ever done is set up a fedora box for ntop, but nothing really in-depth.

Any suggestions?

Ubuntu! 8O Slackware is considered to be safe. It is also very close to Unix so than you can just make one more step and go for FreeBSD which is the safest OS! However, if you are looking for the safest commercially available linux than maybe thy this one:

We will either find a way, or make one.

What I don't understand is what making a website has to do with linux.

BSD is not a Linux distro.
OpenBSD while is great for Zaurus and olivebsd but it is very hard for desktop and laptop. It is more for a server environment. It is possible yes but not easy at all.
FreeBSD has more drivers, support, etc also great for servers but wonderful for all platforms. Kernel hacking and remote hacking happens but is less common because there are less users.

I'll say Slackware and Debian Stable too. I was going to suggest Linux from scratch, but let's not scare you away from Linux.

Gentoo and Fedora are not bad, any Linux distro is better than MS....
best try some distros and pick the one you like the most, I think that's how every Linux beginner started...

I run fedora core 4 and I was impressed with the ease of witch it is installed. Especially when a nub trys it out for the first time. The graphical interface is a basic one that can keep the user going till a more strict diet of linux is consumed.

Good luck on your venture into linux
