[Vote] Linux Distro

Post by ayu »

As some may know, Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron was released today and me, myself is very excited about trying it. But i started to think about other highly used distros, for example Fedora 9 Sulphur is to be released in 19 days from now.

Now my question is, which of these ones would you use, or maybe you are already using it?

Vote and discuss!

After Fedora which I really liked I went on to install suse which I liked even more. So I think that suse is going to be the distro that I am going to be using for a long time.

Debian! :D
I'm using the next release Lenny already since Etch was released, at the start it was of course pretty buggy (I mean, it's the "testing" branch, Etch is "stable"), but now it's already very complete and runs fine.
once you got into Debian it's hard to switch to another distro anyway because Debian is "a little different" in its configuration.

btw, it's not really necessary to switch to the newest releases as soon as they are out, at least not in Debian because their release cycles are pretty long and the support for the old releases is kept up for at least 1 year.

Just noticed some pretty annoying things with the new Ubuntu ^^

1: Recovery mode gives you instant Root

2: xmms doesn't seem to work

3: Firefox 3 is a little buggy

4: I had to add the command "emerald --replace" to get emerald to work properly.

5: Installing the Nvidia drivers was a pain as usual since it needs command prompt environment with runlevel 3.

6: alltray is buggy for some reason.

7: The "custom" option for compiz is not available.

That is all that i have noticed so far ^^

Slackware. Here's some good points:

It's kinda sad when it comes to the point where LINUX USERS start nagging at each other for using the wrong distro ^^

I vote Debian. It's the only distribution that I used for more than testing. It helped me learn a lot about how linux works. Of course that's just server work. I've not used linux as a desktop, yet.

I would use fedora if im using it to make a server and ubuntu if im using it as a desktop.

fedora is amazing for servers, it comes with selinux already configured, and has awesome enterprise features, but kinda sucks if you're trying to use it as a desktop, which is where ubuntu shines.

But for me the only distro is gentoo.

Really? Why? Discuss please. I like to know why people pick their distros.
I mean you said why you would pick fedora for a server in detail but then you said you would pick ubuntu for a desktop so then the gentoo sort of confused me.

Gentoo has unparalleled customization and tweaking options, and amazing performance, plus it uses a BSD-style ports system with tons of nice features.

Gentoo is something worth trying, and i would recommend to anyone, it has a bit of a learning curve to it, but worth it in the end IMO.

If you love Gentoo, have you tried Sabayon then?
