[Help] michrophone only works when I make a change in mixer

Post by ayu »

Ok so I use Skype a lot. And I wanted to use it on my laptop because that is where I do most of my work. The thing is that every time I restart the computer, I have to start alsamixer and switch from "mic" to "front mic" and then back to "mic" again, to make it work =/

Why is this? and is there a way to automate this process?

Note: I use Ubuntu 8.04 on the laptop

What do you mean by that? =/ what model it is? or if it's the front mic or just mic?

I will assume the second one since it's the most relevant xF

It's "mic", the "front mic" is just a sucky one that is built in.

Okay, set it to "mic" (so that it works) and run

Code: Select all

alsactl store
as root. That's supposed to store your ALSA settings so that they survive a reboot.

I'll check the ALSA source to see if you can do the switch easily with a C program in case the above doesn't work. That would be a bit of a hack though.

It saves automatically, and even if it didn't I would just switch back to the settings that I just had =/ since I have to switch FROM mic to front mic, and then back to mic again to make it work.... for some reason.

Did you try System > Preferences > Sound > Default Mixer

From there, set the default mixer to ALSA for the microphone and save the settings, should that not work?

for some reason i think u haven't properly configured it
su to root and type 'alsaconf' it will automatically configure your sound card :D
now as normal user type alsamixer in terminal and change the settings all changes will be stored

I don't think you have quite gotten the issue here =) it IS configured, the issue is that I have to RE-configure it to something else, and then change it back to the same configuration that I started with, it doesn't matter if I save it since I have to change it every time anyway.
