please post:

- output of ifconfig
- messages in /var/log/syslog for a failed connection attempt (simply check the time stamp at the start of each line)

add this to /etc/network/interfaces:

Code: Select all

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
then restart networking:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/networking restart
and see if it works... :)

well, of course you will have to edit the file as root user, best by using vim:

Code: Select all

vim /etc/network/interfaces
< press i >
< edit the file >
< press Esc when done >
< enter :wq! + press Return>
when restarting networking after editing a file you will get a little output because of the newly added NIC, but when you made no changes you will get no output at all...

ok wait :D This is my first time on linux so hold on a sec :?

am i supposed to put vim etc/network/interfaces in the terminal then press "i"...if yes, then im getting that vim isnt installed and when i try to install i keep getting an error.

Thats why i tried to edit some user permissions in the system > administrator > groups and users but still nothing 8O

wow, I didn't expected that a Linux distro don't have vi/vim installed out of the box already *adds it to his "why I don't like Ubuntu"-list*

don't matter, you can use any text editor, I think gedit is the Ubuntu default one....the question is why you can't edit the file, there are 2 possible reasons:

- either you are NOT logged in as root user

- the file is a read-only one and you have to force the text editor to overwrite it (that was what I have shown above by using the vim text editor)

but well, when I look at that I think it's reason #1 ^^

Code: Select all

extortion@3xtortion:~$
so first become root user:

Code: Select all

su
you'll be prompted for the root user password then...
when logged in as root user open the file with gedit:

Code: Select all

gedit /etc/network/interfaces
edit and save it
/etc/init.d/networking restart

done... :)

already looking better, it must be the login data which is causing the problem, double-check if the entry in /etc/ppp/pap-secrets is REALLY correct!
