That doesn't sum it up as far as subjects go, does it...
So Tai (son, 5yrs) came home from school today.
He's learning French words at school. (For one). Flemish school. (For two)
Comes home today and tells F that a heart + arrow is 'haram', and haram means burning in hell.(For three).
I figure since it was just V-Day, some of the Muslim parents took this as an opportunity to explain a part of their religion to their kids.
Which is fine, no problem there.
Tai has been asking of late about God, angels, heaven, and hell.
I've explained (in brief) several of the major religions.
He has decided he will believe in God, and I support that.
What I *don't* like is him telling us a heart (he drew a pic to show us) is hell and hell is where you burn...
So we are going to have a nice chat tomorrow morning.
I plan on explaining more in-depth about two major religions:
Xianity and Islam.
First, I have to ask leading questions to find out what he knows before I launch into anything.
Then I have the chance to explain (based on his knowledge and age).
Most of ya'll won't get a reply in (with me checking it) before I have this woman-to-child talk.
But now, I have to explain/clarify two fundamental religions to a kid as neutrally as possible.
How would ya'll do this?
Here's a starter from me:
1. Islam believes in Allah, Xians in God-God. (b/c Allah is still God lol)
2. Islam says you can't eat pork b/c pigs are not clean.
3. There's no Christmas or Valentine's Day for Muslims b/c they don't believe in Santa and the Saints are a real Catholic thing.
4. Hell is relatively the same in both religions:
Hot, fiery, you burn; but Muslims think different things will take you to hell than Xians.
and so forth, and so on.
Guys, this will be an on-going topic, for at least the next few years while he has constant exposure to Islam.
I want Tai to make informed choice, b/c I'll love him even if he's a gay garbage truck driver
Thanks
LBG

Well, I want him to grow up and learn how to make informed choices.n3rd wrote:why not teach him all religion is bad?.

If I 'program' him into believing all religions are bad, then he doesn't have much choice, nor would he be making an informed decision.
He knows I don't believe in God.
As he grows up, I'll be able to explain things like the Crusades, Spanish Inquisition, gay clergy, atheism, etc etc.

So we talked this a.m.
I'm a wee bit concerned b/c he thinks Mohammed (the kid at school who told him this) is right....
Tai believes (inasmuch as I am able to discern) cupid's hearts are haram and will make you burn in hell...
I've talked to his sitter, and she told me she overheard all the kids talking about Arabs, and how some of the other Flemish parents don't invite the Muslim kids to parties... b/c they are Muslim...
Methinks this is Tai's first exposure to discrimination...
It really is a different society, Europe vs. the US....
(sigh)

Maybe I'm just a cynic and paranoid, but here goes.
I am not religious. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Religion (as far back as I can remember) has never really left a good taste in my mouth.
If I were you I'd be a little edgy about this. I'd be wary of indoctrination. I know my mom has tried to do it to me with Christianity.
One thing that just never made sense with me was all the brainwashing and circular logic. I mean, I don't understand why people can't let kids be kids and when they grow up without trying to recruit children who don't have a full grasp on what they are supposed to "believe" without having the kids work for their agenda.
I'd rather just avoid religion all togeather.

B/c either way it goes, I'll be indoctrinating Tai into some religion or another.
Here we go:
He started out asking if God was real.
(Some ppl believe in this sort of God, other's believe in diff Gods, Mommy believes in this).
What is hell?
(Some think hell is hot and fire, and you burn forever for being bad. Some think there is no such thing as hell and here's why)
What are angels?
Who is the devil?
In the technical sense, I had to deny my own 'religion', and disavow 'magic'.
(Picture this: he goes to school and tells kids I practice 'magic'.. *Muslim* kids...)
Until he is old enough for me to dialogue with him on a deeper level, I sincerely hope he
1. Doesn't take his peers too seriously (mom-intervention)
2. Doesn't take Christianity too seriously
3. Keeps asking questions and isn't afraid.
He was afraid today, and that is what causes me discomfort.
Tai is trying to learn French to be able to 'talk to the other boys'.
(Moe ppl speak French than Flemish, it's more common: Flemish speak French, French don't always speak Flemish)
This thing can be a whole cultural, religious, societal/maternal thing...
Damn...
I've spoken with his sitter, (who's a Serb-Croation non-practicing Muslim- how u luv dat- but a good woman/mom)
and she agreed discrimination in any forms is not welcome. I asked her to correct Tai (in those conversations), divert, or ask him to stop talking about it if she has to.
Aack, I never fully understood parenthood

How would you describe?
How would you describe any of the major world religions?
I mean:
Core beliefs
Fundamentals
Then, to a more spiritual aspect.
It doesn't seem easy to do....
I've never had to explain stuff like this so implicitly.
Ya'll see me on here, debating like it's nothing. But get me to explain this to a 5 yr old future-of-my-generation-and-grandkids...
I mean, why else would I be here; discussing this????
LOL
