What it means to be Wise

Post by DNR »

I think the biggest tension between hackers is trying to determine who is wiser than the other.

Egos get all puffed up and people get so self-assured that they are elite.
Some people act like it is a designation, like they arrived at the top of the mountain.

Wisdom is something real. It is something that we all can possess. To define wisdom, it is a mix of life experience, good common sense, deep insight, emotional maturity, true empathy, and knowledge.

Look at each part of the definition,
life experience - you have to be a well-rounded person - and to do that you need to get out and experience life. You can't really say you know how to do something - unless you actually did it, at least once.

Good common sense - thats pretty rare, trust me. Its about knowing what the right thing to do, at the right time.

Deep insight, don't gloss over events in your life, don't miss the small details of what is going on around you. Think about what is happening. Those that do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat it, etc.

Emotional maturity - a lot of domestic violence is about immature emotions, road rage, and self-destructive behavior - he who can control himself - controls the world. This is a big part of your life and what problems you have in your life. Get control of your emotions.

Empathy - if you don't feel for your brother and sisters, then you are bad. If you do not value people in your life, you will not value your own life.

Ah, the big one - KNOWLEDGE
it is like gold in my belly. :lol:
Beware that self-satisfied feeling - think you know it all? The technology you studied so hard could be obsolete by the time you finish reading this post! =;

Knowledge is maybe two things - Intellectual knowledge and Life Experienced knowledge.
Intellectual knowledge is knowledge base of facts, it is also skills accumulated through observation and study. (hence not actual hands-on experience). The other kind of knowledge is Life experience - these are skills and understanding acquired through life experiences. This is the real deal - hands-on, you built it, you were there, you got the fucking t-shirt. The more life experiences, the wiser you get. Some say you become worldly. This can be measured in a way by age, if you lived to be 80 years old, you can be pretty knowledgeable - if the experiences were meaningful.

Hackers are a combination of both intellectual knowledge and life experienced knowledge. We look upon the neophytes with a smile - we know they can be so full of themselves - full of intellectual knowledge, but lacking in life experience knowledge. We also get offended when people assume that intellectual knowledge can beat life experiential knowledge. We try to give the noobies time to get that understanding.

Why hackers? Why is Wisdom so important?

:-k We think too much.
