Why do you want to Hack ?
Personally I have been in this game for years and was thinking why do I have this desire to try to hack things. Lately I hacked a local marquee that displays the temperature and the sells that the company is having. You can see this one while driving across the freeway and everyday going to work I obsessively thought about hacking it. I guess I am reflecting and want to know why I do it, and well, why you all do it.
Its not for the glory, I have none. Most things I hack I cant share because of obvious reasons. Its not fast like the movies, hell took me countless hours to do the marque and I don't get paid for it. Not to mention the other things I attempted to hack and just got no where.
So whats you reasons for this? If it is for the cicks please don't reply

Well, maybe it's combination. The feeling of wanting to explore and get more knowledge, and the feeling that you have when you are around 5 years old and your parents tell you to NOT TOUCH THAT, but you do it anyway, because you want to do stuff that you are not allowed to.
And maybe it's because you want to show yourself, that you CAN actually do it, or just "test" yourself.
Yeah, I'm not supposed to say it, but....maybe for the kicks? XD

hack for a value
well define kicks - its a thrill when you see something happen - something that you might have caused. When you exploit devices, you get to see something unusual for the first time.
Me? Well the first and foremost reason to hack something is to learn about how it works. Its like exploring caves, you go where you are not supposed to, you get to see shit that many do not see, and maybe you get a cool gift, a souvenir, or a gadget that does something that no one really has.
hacking should have some educational value - why hack something for malice or prank? Why hack something and not understand why it worked? The value behind a hack is you gain insight.

Well you have to actually hack some thing to get the kick out of it. I have not yet heard you talk about hacking any thing or any one. I on the other hand have accessed illegally FTP servers using the infamous goole dork I found, hijacked people accounts, used other people internet connections for illegal or semilegal things, and so on.
It may all sound pretty bad but I really am not doing this to hurt any one. I am learning a lot about internet security in the process.

Smart people don't brag about their crimes though, the smaller the risk of ever getting caught, the better =)

That is true and I too take precautions. I do not talk much about my self. Lyecdevf aka Sebastian DeGenres is a hacker but that is not my real name of course. In real life no one knows I am hacker. I mean no one knows that I am cracker. Maybe some people know I am good with computers but that can be interpreted in many ways. I go to parties and the people I associate have nothing to do with computers. It would be difficult for some one to guess what I do in spare time. I am pretty good at this and I think I will go along way before any one figures it out.
Besides that we have all done bad things in life. I mean we have all commited some type of crime. Even if that was just jay walking it is still a crime. I rather state what I did because I am really not afraid of the consequences. I think that puts throws some good light on me.

Well you don't have to be afraid of them to avoid them. Personally I think it's stupid to take any risks, I mean if I download something Illegal, of course I talk about it to my friends since I trust them, but I don't talk to it to others, or write a bunch about it, I simply avoid it because the consequences might not be very frightening, but it would simply mean even more work in one way or another.Lyecdevf wrote:I rather state what I did because I am really not afraid of the consequences. [begin confession] In my teen years i did a lot of 'hacking' i exploited and rooted hundreds of boxes, i teamed up with a couple of more guys, and we called ourselves elite hackers and hacked anything we found exploitable, and put it proudly on our web page, later we realized that it aint that cool to randomly hack someone, (even if we never damaged anything or let anyone realize we did it), the reason we did it in those days basically was, because we wanted to be part of hacking community, (ofcourse that's not true), we thought we were cool, we thought we were superior than others, we thought we had power, we thought we can teach a lesson to anyone who messes with us.
After a while, our group increased, and one day we really pissed of some big guys, after that day, every next day we had a new visitor on irc asking us questions, and the way they asked questions and the information they had about us, it was obvious they are some sort of law enforcement organization, those suspicious 'guys' asked me a lot of questions too,we used to kick them, and later we made our irc chatrooms private, it was heard that one of our member got arrested, though i dont know if its a rumor or not, but that was enough for all of us to stop, that day i retired from invading networks for fun[end confession]
Later those guys decided to team up again, they asked me to come back but i refused for obvious reasons, it was so bad, i couldnt sleep properly at night, whenever i was alone at home, and the doorbell ranged, it scared the shit out of me, later i installed webcam on the door so that i can already see who's there, though i knew my country did not have any cyber laws at that time, still hearing the news(or rumour) about that guy really scared me off.
I had trouble in my school too, though our "head of computer science department" had no evidence that i did it, but he said no one else could have done it except two guys, one was me and other was my buddy.
So after a lot of shit, i decided to not to do anything like that again, but after some weeks of peace i just realized that there's nothing wrong in discussing it. As living without talking or thinking about it was pretty hard.

for me it's maybe a combination of masochism and the need for self-affirmation...
I mean, the process of figuring something out can be a real pain in the rear, an almost endless chain of failures, but then, deep at night, there comes the point when it really works...and this is a real nice feeling.
it's like a marathon runner that vomited already at 10 km but forced himself to finish the race....there is not even the need to win the race and to be better than the rest because it's about proving it to yourself, no need to prove anything to others.
I think it was Laotse that said:
one that beats others has body power,
but only the one who beats himself is really strong

i want to hack because the internet is like a game to me for example an mmorpg. in that mmorpg you want to become as powerful as possible so that you can crush other players and do things weaker players cannot do. i like to spend my time on the internet and i want to get as good at 'the internet' as possible. also i like the feeling when i am in computer class (still in school) and someone asks me how did i do that. It is even more satisfying when it is the computer teacher that asks you that. I see the internet as a symbol of freedom to do whatever i want. But now people are trying to tell me "no you can't do that" and that is why i want to hack. I'm not going to confess anything because in my eyes i have done nothing wrong.
P.S. i'm going to have to look up masochism i've never heard that word before.
