Read if u wanna hear a good social engineering story...

So my ipod finally died for the 4th time and i just get the call friday afternoon that i could go into best buy and pick up a brand new one. The plan i have says that if this situation happens, after the fourth break, i can get a new ipod of equal or lesser value. (if researched, ull find that if u get the one of lesser value they dont give u the difference.) so i was hoping to get an ipod touch when it comes out. So we got there and went to the customer service desk and this lady with a nice comp was talkin to a geek squad member. some things were wrong with her comp, but nothing i havnt seen before, but the geeks squad guy said she has to buy a new pc. which was a lie. it was SO fixable. So after she left the counter to go buy a new pc my friend, VISSER, (also on these forums) talks to her. I was talking to the ipod people and 5 minutes later i turn around he was holding her computer! he did some mighty fine social engineering and she just gave us her old comp (let her keep the hard drive).
Then the ipod people told me that they dont have any ipods in stock so i took advantage of the situation and did some social enginnering myself.
Im supposed to just get a new ipod of equal or lesser value, but with some good social enginnering i was able to pull off something better! a $320 gift certificate!!!!

long story short we walked in with nothing, purchased nothing......
and came out with a VERY nice PC and a $320 gift certificate to bestbuy!

idk bout the rest of u, but thats a good job and a good friday!

i posted it at about 3 am. And now that i read it.... i have no idea why i typed so much

All it took was to play the angry customer card.

Some sorta "D.I." guy came to the desk to tell me that they had none in stock and he apologizes. so i was like "so..... i cant walk out of here with an ipod today? My ipod has spent more time being fixed than i have been able to use it. Its unlucky that i come the day u dont have any but this isnt a very happy customer."

he started to get red faced and said that hes sorry and that they're gettin a brand new shipment of all the new ipods on tuesday. But i was like...."I want one now and i cant so how am i supposed to get one."

I think to save himeself the chance of losing a customer or making a scene he just said "well we can give credit and u can come next week and get one"
then i said "well what? now ive gotta set up an account?"

he said "no how bout we just give u a gift card"

i was like alright i guess that will work.

so boom all it took was to be an angry customer

i just thought that it was cool that we walked in with nothin and came out with a comp and a lot money we werent supposed to get.

Actually, i have to say that this is in some way a form of social engineering. When your IPOD breaks, you're supposed to get a new one. What he did is he saw this lady's computer was broken, the geek squad proves their stupidity once again, and he gets a free computer that works perfectly fine plus 320 dollars.

Social engineering is speaking to people in a way that you benefit from a situation through manipulation. He manipulated those people by leading them to believe that he probably knew less about computers and wanted a scrap computer for whatever reason.

Ya know..the sad part is that when I saw this the first time(a while back) I did it to some girl and it worked. Geeze..what an idiot she was.

Sounds like a pretty cool story, by the way. The laptop, to me, is the biggest win. I see it pretty often. We fix people's computers for them and it's not too uncommon that when it comes out to be something major they totally lose interest in the machine..
