There are many reasons why you should not reopen a dead thread, and some reasons to why you should.

Usually, someone asks a question, someone else answers the question, and the case is closed, then there is no point in answering the same question in the same thread 2 years later.

There are of course threads that are relevant always, and could be reopened in some cases, as in where the topic still stands as a relevant one 2 years later, like the "introduce yourself" thread, and maybe a thread like "what is your computer specs".

If there is a thread where a number of people are having a discussion, and lets say in about 3 weeks from the thread opening, people stops answering in it because there isn't much to talk about concerning that subject anymore, then 2 years later, someone quotes someone in the thread and says "hehe that's a good point!", then that is considered as completely useless since the discussion has been closed a long time ago, and the one being quoted is most likely either long gone, or not interested anymore.

Also it is a forum standard on the interwebz to now reopen dead threads.

And also, dead thread does not equal useless threads. They might as well have a lot of very good information to the one reading it. But this does not mean that you should answer the one who might have given a good answer in the thread with "hey thanks! good answer!" if the thread has been dead for a few years.

So a discussion can never be started again after 3 weeks or 2 years, alright gotcha! :?

and

Newcomers cannot give praise to a person because the thread is considered dead when they find what they were looking for through using the search engine or browsing... Oh I see 8O

Ma bad everybody! :-s

Don't be so literal ^^

of course if the discussion is still relevant then you can discuss it if it's not to old. Generally because you say one thing, and the thread gets placed first on the board, and then lays there being generally in the way.

And if you want to praise someone for a good old post, then we have a PM system that works perfectly for that =)

Dr., since I was the one that warned you,

The reason why warning of that nature are issued is because new members sometimes try to boost their rank by posting as many one liners in as many threads. We know when we have a good post, and they are left open for updates or additional information. One liners that suck are "hey nice post"

I am not trying to discourage your visit here. Cats and I have been around a bit longer than you, so just trust the wisdom of your staff members. We are just trying to guide you in the least offensive way.
