The founders of the site are in to fight it until the end, they believe in the cause. They said the will burn/give away all their possessions and refuse to hand them even the ashes, in the event they are sued.

Check this out - http://theslip.nin.com/physical/ , they are releasing their own CD's by their own manufacturers in limited quantities - they also have free downloads of the same song. Basically, they think that they can still get paid and their fans will buy their limited quantities of CD's to support the band - some people just like to physically own things, I guess...but most people just want to listen to the music.

Think about it, I am not sure the exact figure but it`s only like 14% from a sale of a single CD's PROFITS that go to the artist, that is after they pay for manufacturing..etc (which I assume the record labels also have their dirty hands into) - with this method, 100% of the profit goes direct to the artist...which is probably more money than if they sold 10 million albums anyway.

They're onto something, I can't wait until the other real artists pick up on this and start releasing their own content and dropping their labels.

[quote="computathug"]P.S, i havent been to the movies or bought a cd for quite sometime.....This is partly the reason why, its control on what we use, buy, everything down to the clothes we wear and the food we eat.
quote]

I cant remember the last time I went to a movie or bought a CD and after this I doubt it will be anytime soon that I ever do. Its all about the greed - but isnt it amazing the truely gifted artists arent bothered but its the wannabe flash in the pan/one hit wonders moaning!! My daughter's mp3 player is full of the latest songs and not a one has been paid for and I have shown her how to dl all her music free and even have her friends coming over to have me upload it to their mp3's !

I think my point in protest was the fact we are losing control over something important.
The internet is a unique form of communication, it is bringing people from all over the world together, to learn about each other.

We really cannot let the media giants control the information we want to share to one another. TV and printed media is adjusted at a level to promote commercialism - its dumbed down and glized up to sell you something, something you don't need.
When the internet first came out, they didn't know what to do with it.

A few of us discovered a unfiltered, uncensored way to express ourselves and meet other like minded people - we had BBS, then IRC, then some watered down versions like AOL and Yahoo. We talked what we wanted, we helped a friend by sharing a file, we got a few mind melds by uploading a ebook or maybe just a song.

Now, we got rules coming. The media giants and the government know whats best for us - and they are going to tell us.

I believe that the big corporations want advertising to be an exact science. So if some one throws in $10,000 worth of advertisement they want to get back $100,000 or more but the idea is that they do not want to see this numbers fluctuate too much.

So when people download movies for free and most of all avoid the commercials it brings pain. These massive corporations would love nothing else than to strip away the world of all music and movies and have us spend our days toiling and shopping for stuff we really do not need. The big corporations want to control us and the bit torrent phenomenon is a big problem for them. Not because of the money but the fact that it chalanges that little world that they believe they live in. :x

I'll paraphrase what my dad said (specifically about the music industry). The music industry has been putting the screws to the consumer since day one. The record execs have always been trying to find ways to maximize income and minimize quality output. Take albums for example. Most albums have one or two good songs and 7 or 8+ god awful pieces of shit. It's been a way to help sustain an elite few band careers instead of putting a bunch of good songs on one album and then the band petering out and not being able to put out a good album. That's more or less the way he put it to me and my brother.

your dad is absolutely right Stav!
here's what one of my favorite bands, the Dead Kennedys, said in the song "MTV get off the air" already more than 20 years ago:
Fun Fun Fun in the fluffy chair
Flame up the herb
Woof down the beer
[click!]
Hi
I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go

My job is to help destroy
What's left of your imagination
By feeding you endless doses
Of sugar-coated mindless garbage

So don't create
Be sedate
Be a vegetable at home
And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll

How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill

You've turned rock and roll rebellion
Into Pat Boone sedation
Making sure nothing's left to the imagination

M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the air
Get off the air

See the latest rejects from the muppet show
Wag their tits and their dicks
As they lip-synch on screen
There's something I don't like
About a band who always smiles
Another tax write-off
For some schmuck who doesn't care

M.T.V. Get off the air
And so it was
Our beloved corporate gods
Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25
"It's the new frontier," they say
It's wide open, anything can happen
But you've got a lot of nerve
To call yourself a pioneer
When you're too god-damn conservative
To take real chances.

Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants
Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now

The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty
Forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest
That's the name of the game

But sales are slumping
And no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?!?

M.T.V.-Get off the air!
NOW
found even a live clip of that song:

Nice find b_b

I remember when MTV first started and although at the time it did play music of sorts, it was still nothing that any of us would have heard unless listening to it on there. Yes at one time it was full of stupid wannabies trying to get famous while singing no matter what. As MTV was an american channel it may have had something to do with time zones but i remember scantily clad young ladies dancing and singing while topless and this was accepted. This would never have been allowed at 6pm on our terrestrial channels as we were very much one of the prudest countries in the world and there is a very famous saying that comes from it.... 'No sex please, we're British'!!!! Well i am glad the Mary Whitehouse era has finished =P.

*Back on topic*
Looks like the big guns are ready for hitting on the P2P companies now and limewire looks to be the number one target. Its also quite surprising at what information gets sent via P2P software and obviously the receiver has done something crazy like leave a copy in the shared folder or something similar reading from a passage here.
Illegal file sharing over peer-to-peer messaging and collaboration networks has long been a concern of Congress, but now lawmakers are turning their attention to inadvertent P2P file sharing.

Cool, two years ago I seen Jello Biafra at the Airport in Toronto. I like "I fought the law" by them too - good band.

What's that you say?
Never buy a CD again
Take a look at this:

Code: Select all

http://soundboard.ath.cx/
full album downloads directly from your browser! Sites in german but it's easy enough to navigate.

(apologies if i'm not allowed to post these sort of links)

I put the site in code brackets just in case, John. Bad_Brain doesn't really want any direct links to legally questionable material or outright illegal material. If there's any doubt put it in code brackets next time.
