Your first internet experience.
It was 1998 and I sat down at a computer for the first time to surf the net. So when did you first go on the net?
We will either find a way, or make one.

about 1987 - I helped my dad setup SendMail and use FTP to download customer lists - both used by his company. Computers back then cost $2000 for a comparable $600 system today. All commo was via the telco lines and the ol squealing modem. Then AOL started giving out free ISP on their disk, they gave out free user/logins to access the AOL ISP - friends would look for the disk in the mail or in magazines and give them to me. When AOL would cancel their free account, I would just use another user/login. I got free internet for a few years, then AOL started requiring a checking account to register.
Old time newbie lesson - make sure the dial-up number is local - if you can dial the number without the area code, its local. I was one of those that got a $600 phone bill.

right DNR, reminds me of my first time on the internet...
well, actually it wasn't called the "internet", there were maybe a few hundred computers available, mostly universities...must have been around 1984.
I had a C64 and bought an acoustic coupler, it was exactly this one:
in germany there were just about a dozen machines available, so I of course spend a lot of time on the computers in the USA....until the phone bill arrived, my dad was not really amused about paying 1000 bucks, so my time on the net ended there for a while...

My dad got our first computer in 1995, I was 6 years old at the time. The first sites I ever visited was hotmail.com, aftonbladet.se and altavista.com ^^
The computer was a high tower and I think it was like a Pentium 333 MHz with like 32 MB RAM and 4 MB GFX card. The modem we used was a 28.8 Kb/s one : )

Oh man! that photo brings memories! I actually touched my first C-64 in 1980 in high school.
When I used the AOL ISPs, the first thing I would do is leave AOL and just use a web browser to surf. Back then people like good ol BB would set up BBS - you would have to dial-in to some of these to check out the 'forum'.
Hacking networks was so easy, like you said - it was new, and there were few enities on the web. It was fun up until the mid-1990's when they enacted the Federal Laws against "unauthorized access to a computer or network" , until then - there were no laws against hacking! Imagine THAT newbies!
Soon, other ISPs saw the business success of AOL and started creating more ISPs to choose from, then came web hosts - for people to set up their own websites.
By the mid-1990s I had built computers and networks for my dad's customers. I had to learn to wire RJ-45 jacks with twisted pair, I had to learn to crimp coax connectors. I left the sales job to go work for a Network Solutions company, and built rackmounts and bigger networks.
I did not actually take any school for CIS/IT until late 1990's for certifications. A whole ten years of computers and networks - with no school yet! Of course the experience I had made me the top student in the class.

Well mine is very similar to cats.
I first got a 233 Mhz Pentium 1 with 32 RAM for like 1200 $ and a dial-up connection when i was about 6-7 years old.
And of course the phone bill was > 400-500 $ so my parents actually stopped it until DSL and Broadband arrived
I remember the sites i used to visit : hotmail.com, astalavista.com to read chinese and of course a couple years later DreamLand : worldsex.com ..... ^^

I started around 1999, searching for "cheats for pokemon red" and stuff like that... I was 9 or something back then... and wow I sucked at using altavista and later google. I was allowed to surf the web like 30-60min 1-2 times a month, and it was always tough to get those downloads finished in time
I was using my dad's 133mhz comp, I also had my own (dad-s old high-end-at-its-time 100mhz 486 (or whatever they're called ) which had a graphics card! ), but it didn't have a modem.

It was like on 1996 or 1997, i was looking for wu-tang images and lyrics and some softporn .We dont have our own so im hanging out at some net cafe, it was all on dial up. 2 or 3 years later my mom bought us a PC, and started connecting to internet for the first time at home using dial-up cards. i still have some of it.
