IRC Domain

If I were to set up an IRC server would I have to buy a domain name? Even if I didn't have a website?

It would look nice, but all you really need is an external IP.

yep! after all the only purpose of domains is that they are easier to remember than IPs (ok, and the possibility of virtual hosts)...in the end the domain name is resolved into the IP anyway.

You could get a free domain as well. If you have a router, your router will often keep your domain up to date with dyndns.org or TZO.com. I believe both of those provide free domain names, though your domain would look something like "yourname.tzo.com" or something.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

I forgot about dyndns. Thanks. Other than that what are the advantages of a paid for domain vs. a free domain?

The only advantage i can think of is that you would be able to pick your domain name and that you have ownership of that domain.
