You guys have to be careful. There are plenty of scam going around, and their main intent is to collect personal information from you and get you to sign up with a credit card or bank account. They can promise to deliver a brand new laptop if you only pay $15.oo shipping and handling - wow! you think they are only going to hit your credit card for $15? No - since you gave them the CC#, exp date, and CCV - along with your name, they have everything they need to charge WHATEVER they want to that CC. So its the old scam - promise anything, get customer to sign up and give CC#.
The same goes for job offers - some will be interested in hiring you - and you need to fill out a resume - a resume that ask for all your personal nfo, drivers license #, and social security #. Some will try to be gutsy and ask for your bank nfo - to verify your credit. Again, this is a phishing scam to steal your identity.
How do you protect yourself? You can read email headers to see where it came from, obviously the Bank of America is not going to be sending you email via joeblow@aol.com - any corporate email should originate from the corporate network.
Know your TOS, FAQ, about your internet bank, utility company, social networking site - example - most will not ask for your passwords in email, or phone.
Have Common Sense - no one is going to give you a million dollars for helping with a wire transfer - they just want your bank account number!
Use a separate Credit Card for internet purchases - you can't always be sure who you are dealing with, even legit sites can get cross-scripted to another site, or your data can be 'lost' by that website. The crackers will only be able to steal what is on the Internet Credit Card that you 'recharge'. An Internet credit card also provides anonymity - as it is a rechargeable credit card issued by a no-name holder. The credit card is not the one your bank account is attached to.
And lastly, check the hoax sites, usually you will find hoaxes copied word for word. The main intent for hoaxes is just to embarass the person who forwards it. It is impossible for someone to get credit for X amount of forwarding. You are only adding your friends emails to a list to be spammed later. Never forward email that tells you to.period.
