I am so trying this!!! I am going to have my son put a website together for me today because this sounds great. This is so off the technology track, but when I was much younger, poor, married and hungry ( sounds lovely, huh?!) I would write to companies and tell them that there was a fly in whatever product they sold, or hair etc.. They would send me TONS of coupons for free product. I know that sounds dis-honest and wrong, but when you are trying to feed kids you get desperate. I figured it was better than going and stealing it from the store at least!

What I am showing in this thread is actually what the big business wants to happen. No stealing here.

I takes a year, sometimes more to learn a CPUs or an FPGAs functionality. The time that it takes to learn the workings, is often called the "learning curve." When a chip manufacturing company wants to sell chips that may have a steep learning curve they offer up free samples of it. This way you can overcome the learning curve for free and like a drug you'll always want to use it in future projects. In turn making them $$.

I used this trick to get myself a Xilinx dev board worth $800 for $50, and a free PIC programmer from Microchip. Just showed them my uni card and said I was working on a robotics project for my PhD. They pretty much consider any academic attention to their products a positive.

When I was rebuilding co2 lasers I would ask companies for samples of their products. When I explained what I was doing they were more than happy to send me what I needed.

I also found out that If you get to know people in the companies you can sometimes send small things like kringle, or beer or whatever to that person and get priority service. I needed two special parts for a machine that were on backorder for a month. Knowing the people on the other end and sending something special to them managed to get me the parts from a machine that was on the assembly line. Every time I called after that I always managed to get my parts to keep the machines up.
