website to top google list

I am trying to figure out how to bring a site to the top of a Google search. I have a basic HTML understanding. I understand that i will need to include key works and meta tags. But can i get some more specifics?

phew....SEO (search engine optimization) is an own science, and in many fields it's even a pseudo-science because the way search engine providers like google rate a site is a company secret.

but here some basic things that are a must for a good ranking:
- a short domain name and pretty URLs (/hello is better than /module.php?=hello.php)
- meta tags and keywords have to fit to the site, if you have "hacking" in the keywords make sure it also appears often in the site content, also respect the max. length for the tags and keywords (5-10 keywords and 255 letters)
- update the site content regularly
- avoid duplicate content, so best set up a redirect to www. if non-www. URLs are called (google handles mysite.com and http://www.mysite.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as 2 sites, and this means duplicate content)
- get linked by other sites. but don't do it by spamming, google recognizes this, get legit links (good way to start is by banner exchange with friends' sites). make sure not to link to "bad" sites like porn or malicious ones.
- use "alt" tags for images, crawlers can't see images, so you have to tell them what the images are about
- make sure your site loads fast. google likes fast sites, if your site loads too slow crawlers can leave again before the whole content is indexed. a good way to speed up things is by using gzip compression (if the host allows it), also make sure not to use unnecessary large images

if you follow all that it should be a good start, but don't expect too much, SEO takes time and patience...

send me the website i will give it a once over, i am helping with so many projects for ethical reasons that i havent got time to take on any more free work and as b_b says its an ongoing process.

What i can do is then guide you on the steps to help improve, the site may need redesigning and this is where corporations are now tapping into this market and charging thousands for this a year plus continuous web work so inbox me the website then i will start a section off on what to check and how to structure the site and with right server settings which if you ask b_b to show ya how quick our sites load up and i will show you sites we have worked on and how it works and you will pick it up yourself.

Please be warned this will become your full time job, if you want a skype meeting then i will show you how it can be done then will monitor how you go when i get chance, unless of course she would care to donate a small fee for my time once she see's the results.

Im sure if we all the people who want to work out their own ways and we share our links with relevant sites and to each other this can help improve how google relates to you site so if people are building websites here and want to you can also work on your own projects

I work with a company that does a lot of SEO and B_B is right when he says that it is a science.


I dont have an NDA with this company so I can legally and happily tell you a lot about how we make a lot of money off of it.

You have all your meta tags and keyworks like you had mentioned. Those will be different between each page. Also try and use keywords or descriptions that are better than the first few things that come to your head.
What i mean is that if you have a lot of keywords that are similar to any of your competition there is nothing to set you two apart. So when we built a website for a nursing home we didn't just make it look like another nursing home to google. Since it was more or less a high class nursing home we targeted that demographic and that got us more results.
Next you have to make sure that any of your content is different. Even if you are talking about the same thing between two seperate pages you need to make both pages totally unique. Especially the title!
After we get our demographic targeted and primed for google searches with all those changes we usually move on to the robots.txt. to get all the info possible on that guy go here: http://www.robotstxt.org/robotstxt.html


This is just a quick run down but it gives you an idea of what is done by us who do it daily lol
