stumbled over a really nice FF plugin named "page speed":

it integrated into Firebug, so you need to have that plugin installed too, which any web developer should have anyway:

with the page speed plugin you can analyze the page loading time and the bottlenecks which slow it down. but not only that, it also makes suggestions how to speed up the site and even provides optimized file versions (like optimized .js and .css files and even lossless reduced images).
I have used it to speed suck-o up, with minified .js and .css files, reduced image sizes, the use of mod expires, etc., the rating increased from 58/100 to 76/100...
