icq take over

Post by curiouskitten »

Hi all....My daughters icq is being used by this guy on another computer and he is chatting to her firends posing as her. I am assuming he knows her password. He is being ugly and rude to her friends and they think it is her. I have tried to get a new password but can't because the questions that come up when i type in the icq # aren't her questions. So I use her email address that is clearly in her icq details and it says that it can't send a new password to that email account. It is a hotmail account. I don't understand. I am asking....is there another known way to change the password or is there anything else I can do to stop this idiot? I have contacted icq about this but they just tell me to register a new icq. I guess they mean just LET HIM HAVE IT.

He hasn't changed the password...she can still get on

RE ICQ

Post by maboroshi »

If like you said the dude has not changed the password and assuming how he got it was not through logging your key strokes. Then like gogeta said change the password

But I would reccomend checking your system for suspicious things maybe run your antivirus make sure its up to date and run spybot checks also

good tools to use

Antivirus

http://free.grisoft.com

Anti Spyware

http://www.safer-networking.org >> Spy Bot S&D

http://www.lavasoftusa.com >> Lava soft Adaware

I would also recommend getting a fire wall either hardware or software

a good free software firewall would be Zone alarm

http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html

Good luck and I hope the dude doesn't cause to much damage

Sorry

Post by maboroshi »

Sorry I didn't see that you couldn't change the password

I would suggest changng it from within the program assuming you can still log in to ICQ

you can change the password in ICQ Pro by going to main then security preferences

Not sure about the other version

cheers

one problem though is if he changed the default email to his own so that anytime you change the password he could just send a request for them to send the password to his email.

so also if theres a way in the program for you to change the default email address i would do that to.

I have mcafee personal firewall. I have chnaged the password within the program but once he gets on it it goes back to the old password. It says"your icq is being used on another computer" sometimes i can take it back by logging back in and sometimes i can't. I also have mcafee virus scan on the computer...it hasn't found anything. I have run spybot and Lavasoft Ad-Aware on it but nothing shows up. I don't understand how he is doing this. Thanks for your replies and input.

hmm

Post by maboroshi »

I would try changing your email address first and then change your password you can do this through your settings if it defaults back to the original I would suspect some sort of malware is on your system

I would suggest this program then to look at all the processes that happen at start up (if icq loads at startup you will see if anything loads with it)

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

the program is called start up list

I would also remove the list of software that is allowed to access the internet in my firewall and then start icq to see if you get any info on any other programs that are accessing the net if anything looks suspicious do a google search for the file that is accessing the internet

Anyway sorry I couldn't be much more help

Cheers

right, best would be to change the email-adress and use the "lost password"-function to receive a new one through email.
if the problem still appears then the computer must be compromised in some way. in that case you could run HijackThis! and post the log here, so we can look for signs of malware...

Googled these:

-lsass.exe
-smss.exe

Both are potential Trojans, but it's not for sure. Google both of them and click on the links that have www.liutilities.com as the web page. It'll give you information on those running processes.

ok, i googled them...it says that isass.exe is an optix.provirus-trojan. Then it saysit is a process of the Microsoft Windows Security mechanisms.
smss.exe - determining whether this process is a virus or a windows process depends on the directory location. It should be located in the C:\windows\system 32 folder. In other cases smss.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm!
It says that it is a process which is part of the mocrosoft windows operating system called the Session Manager Subsystem. It is also a process which is registered as a number of trojans and mass mailing worms, and the PWSteal.Wowcraft.B password stealer.

The site is wanting you to buy their product " WinTasks 5 pro" to see if it is a virus or not...

Geez...

i went to Mcafee.com and downloaded STINGER onto my desktop and ran it but it showed nothing. I also ran Mcaffee's free virus scanner on their site and nothing showed up. Am I relying too much on mcafee?

Thanks for the help...

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Windows Sz Host] winshvc.exe

Code: Select all

Name: windows sz host
Filename: winshvc.exe
Command: Unknown at this time.
Description: Added by a variant of the W32/SDBOT WORM!
definitly the source of your problems!

update your virus definitions, boot into safe mode and then run the antivirus scan (files that are in use can´t be deleted by antivirus software, so you maybe can´t get rid of it in normal mode).
to be on the safe side delete the registry entries manually afterwards:

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type regedit
3. Click OK.

4. Navigate to the subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinRAR SFX

5. In the right pane, delete the value:

"C%%Program Files%999" = "%ProgramFiles%\999"

6. Navigate to the subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

7. In the right pane, delete the value:

"load" = "%ProgramFiles%\999\uncanny.exe"

8. Exit the Registry Editor.

this malware spreads through msn-messenger and is specialized in stealing passwords, so make sure to change all your passwords when your system is clean again!!
