No, you are safer hacking your sisters computer - to simulate a realtime crack situation - when you are in an Internet Café with the downloaded necessary tools.
Lyecdevf wrote: I have heared about the posibility of the firewall some how being breached by a dos attack. So than some one could hack it. So let's leave it at that.
No, no. You are learning the terms, now it is time for practise, here, you might want to read this :
http://suck-o.com/modules.php?name=Foru ... opic&t=642

And then .. well .. put it in practise man, there's no other way as hacking in your own system from a remote machine, you'll soon see the security leaks -by human lack of concern or software stupidities- that *you* left open, o yeah!
I remind the numerous days abroad and me starting to sweat because i noticed that some priviliges on mysystem where exploiteable at any time and so i had to run like a madman to the first guy with a computer and 'phone home' to fix the leak.

1. You said someone posted the IP in the room, inviting a hack.
You cannot be sure that IP belongs to that person or 'his friend'. Some lamers try to stir up a DoS by proxy - you are the proxy doing the attack for him.

2. When you learn more about how networks and computers work, you can understand their vulnerabilities.

Lets pretend the IP is an address for a building.
You find the address on a map so you can locate it
You run queries at local offices to find out who owns it and what the building is used for.
Based on building materials used, the purpose/use of the building, and the kind of person taking care of the building, you detect its vulnerabilities.
1.anyone home?
2.Lights on?
3. Doors / windows unlocked or broken?
4. Anything of value?

When you are finished, you have completed a security survey.
To actually go up to the building, and breach a door or window is the commision of a crime, same as computer crime.

Test your own network, because you will benefit from having both sides of the hack in your control - your sister's computer and the remote one.
Beware that some attacks will be detected by your ISP, and you could be TOS'ed.
The IP is just the address for that computer, and if it is dial-up, it is not static, meaning the IP is loaned out to someone else.

The operating system and its networking applications are what you will try to hack to gain control of the machine.

Very, very good post there, DNR.
That's how to resume his situation.

Neat compact and efficient post there :-)

That is why I am taking things slow. I do not want to go to far to fast.

I have heard about a program that prevents your ISP provider to monitor you. I guess if you have that, use proxies, and play safe there is really little chance of you getting caught. Unless you steal money and stuff.

There's ALWAYS a chance of getting caught.

Never do something thinking there's VERY little or NO chance of getting caught..it's dangerous thinking.
And..if you think about it..doing something illegal or thinking to do it, is dangerous. So..no matter what, there will be a danger.

Later.

Yeah, but that is exactlly what makes it exciting. I find this very much exciting. Others jump of bridgers to get the adrenaline pumping but for me it does not get any better than this.

You missed the point.

I was suggesting that you be careful. And, if you didn't know there were dangers involved, I was informing you.

Lol..yeah..I remember how excited I was when I first discovered it..and I'm still excited about it...but know this, there is no easy hack.

All right, here another clue :

http://users.skynet.be/blue.sky/jdcjdr/sp/aircrack.swf

What is happening in that movie, according to you ?

What are his chances to get caught ?

Think seriously about it before trying this at home, really.
Like others say here, take the cshure for the unshure, no place for a doubt.

Thnaks for the link. It is a beautifull site. However, the page does not open up coorectlly so I can not see the whole of the site. I just see a small portion of it and a lot of the action is left out of my screen.

Today I happened to have add it to my gmail bookmarks and when I clicked on the link it opend up the page so that I could see the whole of it for a brief moment and there I saw WEP hacking. So than I did my research. I found that this applies to wireless networks which are noted to be easy to hack. Since I know that some wireless conections are not monitored well I guess some one who would hack in could be if he was luck or knew very well what he was doing could get away scot free.

This ain't a cartoon or a movie...

Local Host Name : analyst-8365ff2
OS Version : Windows NT 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 2
Description : Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN - Packet Scheduler Miniport

Ain't no such thing as anonymity on a wifi network. AP (access points n00b) can be simply plugged in to a network router. Some AP software will record the NFO like above everytime I login. Any computer running a sniffer can record my converstations in email, and IMs. Cookie playback can gain access to my accounts, or even display the user/pwd. My hacking activities of sniffing, scanning, and just plain old wardriving can get the police all over me like flies on shix. I could lose my laptop while they examine it in evidence, I could have to at least appear in court with a lawyer to explain to n00bs what wardriving is. I am not your average citizen, I stand out because I am unusual. The legal system wants to dictate how society must behave, it is failing, and outcasts like me are to carry the blame. So, I carry the risk to act out my hacking instincts everyday....

I understand your excitement, but make sure that you use that energy for study and education. Too many people just want to stand on the sidelines, running skript - to get the hacker high. They are just a bunch of crack whores jiggling up and down on the corner beggin for the next hit..
"I'll sux yo' dick if you teach me how to hax hotmail..."

This ain't about belonging to a hacker cult, it is a matter of legal and ethical issues. Most people in this group have worked hard, long hours, and frustration at the console. Some of us have put in the time in college and onthejob. This is kind of a elitist group, bullshitting your way won't fly with intellects. Neos are respected here, there is no other pleasure in the 'elite' to see a mentor grow..

That is a great post DNR. It seems like you really know what you are talking about.

I know that hacking is a long term process and that there are no short cuts to it. I am not learning this just so that some day I could hack into some place. In the process I am learning about computers, internet and a whole lot more. It is some thing that I love to do in free time. No question about it and this is a great place to do it.

I was not aware that there was so little privacy on wireless conections. I definitlly will not try to hack on those. Besides that I have a cable conection to the internet and I am quite happy wiht it and since I do not travel much I do not intend to use any time soon WIFI conections. So I will put that to rest.

I know that all noobs want to hack into hotmail and stuff but I never was interested in that. Recentlly a friend of mine showed me that they have https:// which means that they use SLS (secure layer sockets) which banks and other institutions use to transmit money. So you could just as well hack into a bank and at least steal money. That way you would at least be rich. I have heard that the 10 million that Vladimir Levin stole from Citybank was never fully recovered. Which means that it is possible to steal money in such a way. But that is not what I am interested in either. Every 90 minutes there is a bank robery in Europe and if I wanted money I guess I could use a more established way. All though that is not what I ever had in mind. Just in case you were wondering.
