Put your hard drive in another PC and back up your stuff.

Maybe this is the time to give up on Windows,,,

k if this is on boot, then insert the windows disk and boot from cd. I reccommend two options here. go into repair when loaded and then run

1) chkdsk
2) fixmbr

Thes e are the two options i have used when having problems with the boot configuration.

Hope this helps

Its not fair to rap the OS, there are many variables to consider.
My XPsp2 has been running without major issues or even a crash since brought it back in 2005.

Since I haven't had the need, have you checked your Windows XP disk to see if it has a "Repair" selection? If you haven't used your disk as a coffee coaster, insert it now.

Hmm, i think one very important thing we're forgetting here is to ask what he was doing, or any changes he made (both hardware and software) before the computer crashed.

I doubt your windows is destroyed, i've recovered some really bad fuckups on other people's computers similar to the problem you're having.

Also, give us the hex codes and the error message of that blue screen, this will help isolate the problem more. Also, believe it or not, but sometimes booting windows (in the boot selection screen), if you choose the one that says something about "domains" it actually works.

Give us some more information for now, and from there, i will try to help you more.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

i gotta agree with cats...grab linux live, copy your stuff to a flash drive and give yourself a fresh install...i suggest knoppix, very quick for a live cd and easy to navigate.

learning linux should not be because your other OS crashed.

It should be at a logical pace, and with thought.
After much thought (especially after finding my game library of all my cool PC games (half-life!) I decided that I will always have at least one windows box for the games. I also have some old tools that I collected, for windows PC.

As I get my computer lab up, I test and find my AMD 450 mhz box is working, as well as a intel 233mhz box. Both have removable harddrive caddies installed in the front, so I can swap out various OS...

I agree with gog, your crash likely does not necessitate a re-format and re-install - that was a line that we fed noobies just to get them off our backs

This shows again why important files should be kept off line, so a reformat and reinstall is not so painful. And why you should keep copies of your drivers too.
