spybot sucks

Post by bad_brain »

why? because it slows down the networking performance.
since my last new XP setup last weekend I had mysterious problems with slow DNS lookups (you know, the "looking up"-phase when loading a website for example)....usually it took max. 1 second but this time it took up to 10 seconds, which kinda ruins the surfing experience.
after suspecting the browser, my ISP, the NIC driver and my desktop firewall I tried a lot of optimizations but none really helped. today I wanted to make a test by entering the IP of suck-o.com directly into the hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\systems32\drivers\etc) which should speed up loading the site because the DNS lookup is skipped....but when I opened the file I found LOADS of entries made by Spybot to blacklist "malicious sites" by setting their ip to 127.0.0.1.
so on every DNS lookup the whole list was processed first, and THIS caused the bad performance! ](*,)

Yeah lol, first time I saw that was when hijackthis reacted one it xF

Spybot is good, but don't use that function that "fixes" browser vulnerabilities (can't figure out the name atm)

I prefer Adaware.

First, i got pissed because spybot kept ruining adware. I was never able to run them together. Maybe they fixed that problem now...

And afteri ran adaware and get rid of useless non-critical spyware, spybot always finds more shit. And most of it is totally harmless, at lest in my case. I think it cleans to much.. its too nosy and fucks up shit.

But its still a respectable software i think, cuz its freeee!

Why isnt it? The immunization from what i can see, all it does it adds a bunch of known adware, malware sites to your win hosts file as a loopback to 127.0.0.1 to prevent and block you from going to the known adware/malware sites, but i could be wrong im just learning about this stuff

I do not like it either. It is better to get the AVG free editon anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-bot. You would be pretty secure that way.

Besides that I have heard at least for ad-aware that it infects your computer with its own spyware or some thing like that. So you may want to be careful with these sort of things.
We will either find a way, or make one.

old news

Since someone else re-opened this thread
I noticed a misspelling above and here is the correction:

The host file is located here:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

and opened with notepad.exe...

Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

---eof---

now this thread can rest in peace...
