Stop Windows from creating thumbs.db

Post by ayu »

Something that has always annoyed me on Windows XP (and Vista now as well), is that thumbs.db gets created in every damn folder that has images, filling my drive with crap.

So I found a solution (on google, ofc)
1. In Explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options or open the Folder Options icon in the Control Panel.
2. Choose the View tab, and turn off the Do not cache thumbnails option.
3. Click Ok.
or
1. Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
3. Double-click the DisableThumbnailCache value, or go to Edit -> New -> DWORD value to create a new value by that name.
4. Enter 1 for its value.
5. Click Ok and close the Registry Editor when you're done; you'll have to log off and then log back on for this to take effect.
Hope it helps someone else as well ^^

oh, nice, I guess everyone got those annoying "want to move the write protected file thumbs.db?" prompts already....
so the only negative aspect disabling this is that the preview images (if using this display option at all) have to be created new every time? :-k

ok, I checked it out and also read some stuff I found on google about it...it's safe to disable it, because its only use is really to cache the thumbnails...

well, you could say is useful to avoid rebuilding an index every time you access a directory with a lot of images, if thumbnails are enabled that is

in a dir with a lot of images (gigas like) the cache can reduce read access from the disk, at least to a point since cache has its own limit

however, it is kinda pointless to have the thumbnail feature activated all the time, in any case, you could just use it while looking for an image in particular or use some sort of a software to have a gallery, there's a ton of them and more efficient than window's thumbnail feature

why thumbs.db is a security risk

Post by DNR »

The file is not all that big, just kbs. Its not annoying - but a security risk.
Thumbs.db can be decoded to determine what pictures ou had on the disk.

The early versions of thumbs.db files as they appeared in Windows ME and Windows 2000 contained
not only the thumbnail image of the parent file, but also the filename, drive letter, and path to that
image. Later versions, Windows XP and Windows 2003, store the image and its filename but not the
path.

An interesting aspect of thumbs.db files is that when a graphic is viewed and an entry made for it in the database, it is maintained indefinitely by the operating system. If the file is deleted, the image will
remain unless the thumbs.db file or the entire folder are deleted.

So just on the off hand chance you download porn with suspicious names like 10yrbj.jpg, 9yrdaddysux.jpg - you might delete the original photofile from your porn folder, but its still there! Forensic tools like FTK and Encase can view these thumbnail caches.
So, a suspect who has deleted evidence of photos prior to seizure of the computer, may still have thumbnail images of the graphics stored in the thumbs.db files. These graphics will remain, even if the folder is renamed or they may be located in unallocated space as deleted files.
So good idea, but for the wrong reason..

Well I don't like having useless files laying around, thus an annoyance for me ^^ so, why would it be the wrong reason?

Very interesting software is ftk and encase and is definitely something i will look into more. I think every company that does repairs should run programs like this at the first sign of suspicious activity from the end user.

Ok we don't like people invading our privacy but where photo's are concerned there are not a lot of reasons why people would want to hide them or try to totally remove them except spies and internet pedophiles. The illegal weed grower etc should also be careful what he uploads to his/her pc for home printing, websites etc, but thats their own personal choice.

I am for one quite happy that this is a feature in windows. I had a customer call and ask if i could get all her photo's back of her daughter who had died aged 3. The pc got a virus and they inserted the recovery disc and formatted the hd. If the pics wernt cached it might have made it a lot harder to get the lost memories back which they were very happy about. Maybe im wrong about this?

I also agree DNR someone may download something they dont want. A couple of times maybe excusable as a mistake if its not what it is thought to be but how many times would be too much of a coincidence.

I think this should be looked into more
