Yes, unfortunately the MSN 8 is useless from now on. I found out about this sad news today. :(

I've got a warning while trying to sign in the 8 and was prompt to upload, so I downloaded it via that warning message.
If that doesn't work there's always good alternatives like Pidgin, Trillian, Miranda etc.

Is 8.5 the latest version while 9 is a beta?

"Due to a request from Microsoft, this download has been removed temporarily. However, Windows Live Messenger 9 will be available for download here as soon as it is oficially published."

this one works for me, it's the full offline installer...

P.S. argh, I hate you...now I have it installed, I only wanted to test if the install works at all and wanted to cancel it before it REALLY installs it, but it installs it without asking anything automatically... ](*,)

you have to have your xp box up to date with windows updater, i tried to install messenger and i got the same thing then after messing around i found out that you you need i guess a small patch or file or something that lets windows IM 9 (or 9.5 i think) after that i havent had a problem.
