helo im having a problem trying to access in our network. im using windows xp SP1 and using a router. withing the network i can ping other computer on the network i can see other computer on the network but the problem is that i cannot use the file and printer sharing on the network because when i try to access other computer... it says that access denied because i do not have any admin settings though i am logged in as an administrator.. and we had tried to reformat all of the computer and not even one can access other computer within our network. so can you please help me with these...

Okay, if a PING gives results, that's ok, TCP/IP is sane.
Since you typed that "you can see the other computer", does that mean that if you type :
"\\MACHINENAME" , you get a window open with that yellow connected folder icon with the name of the remote computer or not ?

(By MACHINENAME i am not explicit, it could be whatever you pet-named your machine, Socrates, Chewbacka, Computer1, .. but the PATH is : like for a drive "C:\,","D:\","E:\",.. except that "\\MACHINENAME looks up for a distant machine/drive/device and opens a dialogue with it. Their are other methods do access machines but that requires DNS and DNS requires another posting here).

If yes, then i think you forget one essential thing : you may have forgotten to enable or even install "File and Printer sharing" in the configuration panel somewhere. Do that on both computers!

After that is done or checked, you have to enable a root folder to be shared, otherwise you are doing all the work for nothing :
right click on "My Docyments" check the "Share this folder" option and then type this in the address bar :
"\\MACHINENAME\My Documents\path\to\sub_folder\file" and see if you can get something from that other machine.

If no, you might have forgotten something by installing the router, check and read the manual of your router and drivers twice and come back to suck-o saying "YAY! It's alive!"

Note : check also on both computers if you have DHCP-service and something like Windows Name Service toggled on "enabled" (WINS), otherwise you might work in th dark for a long time :

Another thing to check is both the computer's environment/settings/advancd : check the "This computer is part of a Network" on on and give your computers a name and a cute environment name or leave the default "WORKGROUP" and eventually ad a dns suffix for later.

ok sir.. i'll better try that because altough the TCP/IP component is already intalled and i tried to reinstall it. and my computers on the network can connect to the internet with no problem. but anyway ill just try your suggestion.

Just because you are on a network does not mean you have file-sharing capabilities.

You have to tell Windows you want each comp on the network to be able to "share" everything, otherwise you are just sharing your connection.

Go through the network setup again, find the option and click the bad boy.

i tried all the steps but still it won't let me access other computers on the network. i also tried the troubleshooting steps on microsoft site but still it won't work. because when i try to use the command net view on the command prompt it prompts me to a sytem error 5 which describes still access denied. but anyway i thanks you for your help sir. if you have still any suggestions just post it and i'll be happy to try it. thanks

You have weird computers over there man. At work we have 2 Macs, 3 PC all connected with a couple of routers (that had to be hubs but my `techie' colleague is a little bit distracted) and all of them have internet and shared network installed and access to my computer where all the files are.

I installed the intranet part just as described as above in less than half an hour. (the routing already being installed before i arrived at that office).

yeah i know mate that it is weird in fact i've to that page already regarding system error 5. and 25 computers are all connected in the network with a couple of hub. but anyway thanks for your help sir..

Re-do your network setup. Go through the wizard again.

You have it configured to share an internet connection, I am assuming, but not files.

well now it works!!! i just remade the network structure and tried to reinstall the OS by default. well thanks for all of your help in this topic.
