Win 7 ultimate

Post by Macross »

So finally i bought a new pc.
specs:

Code: Select all

Intel® Core™ i7 860 2.8GHz (max. 3.46Ghz) / Intel P55/H55 LGA1156 / 4 GB DDR3 1333FSB / 1.5TB SATA2 / ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB DDR5 256bit DX11 / DVD+-RW Light Scribe
So i've installed windows 7 ultimate 64bit on it and after install i noticed that it uses 900mb of ram idle. Is that normal for 64bits or something is wrong?

Mine is using the 1gb {idle with nothing else running} on a system with 2gb max RAM.so far no performance issues that I can see.it's normal you don't need to worry about. :)

Yeah, it's normal your operating system takes up a fucking gigabyte of memory.

A bit harsh, but he has a point. It just goes to prove that MS has not taken the care to solve one of their oldest problems - excessive use of limited computer resources.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

My laptop with Arch Linux uses 190MB on boot up, 245MB in a graphical environment.
My Eee PC with NetBSD uses 14MB on boot up, 33MB in a graphical environment.

That reminds me I want to switch that Arch Linux laptop over to FreeBSD.
Those are idle times, the machine is ready to run any application I want.

These are not scientific measurements, just ones to ponder.

well, win7 can surely be optimized a little by turning off unneeded services, disabling shiny desktop effects, etc., but 1 GB is really A LOT when you compare it to Linux, even my most crowded server with +50 domains uses only about half of it:

Code: Select all

top - 12:34:01 up 96 days, 21:22, 1 user, load average: 0.07, 0.02, 0.00
Tasks: 79 total, 1 running, 78 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 7.2%us, 0.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 92.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 1946212k total, 1700432k used, 245780k free, 175360k buffers
Swap: 999992k total, 91368k used, 908624k free, 911988k cached
as explanation: unused RAM is allocated as cache, so it's:
used - cached - free = actual RAM usage, which is about 550MB.

P.S. before somebody says "haha! your system is not well configured, it swaps!": it's because of a daily db backup, I could nice the process but I prefer speed over resource-friendliness.
