My 10Kwatt Electric Motor

Post by floodhound2 »

I understand the future will include more and more electric conversion vehicles so during the pandemic I decided to design my own using only hand tools.

I designed this to be an efficient 10Kwatt system using a PMAC motor, various Aluminum parts, a 600 amp Kelly motor controller and 72volt LiFePo4 battery bank that employs a BMS, charger and 500Amp contact. I also used an aluminum 2:1 gear reducer to keep the RPMs low while doubling the torque.

The basic chassis, pictured below. I designed using electronic schematic software even though its not electrical at all. Its 1/2" aluminum plate and pipe. No welding just all bolted together.

I mounted this system in my 20,000 pound sailboat so every connector is watertight and of aircraft quality - think gold plated.
Below is the 7.2Kwatt LiFePo4 battery bank. I ordered the 24 battery's off Alibaba directly from the manufacture. I hand cut each Nickle plated bus bar and drilled each hole. Took a few beers that day.

Total cost of the project is about $4,500.
Forgot to show the unit installed in the boat.

Dude, nice work! You've effectively built yourself half of a ~$300,000 boat (ballpark guess) for under $5000 =D>
It just goes to show how simple of a concept electric vehicles are at their core. They're basically scaled-up versions of the RC cars some of us played with as kids :P

So... when are you gonna show us your electric airplane?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...
