GPS Tracker Fun!

Post by ayu »

Third time trying to post this .. good old "Method not implemented" error.

If this doesn't work, I'll give up ^^

Aaaanyway, so I bought a GPS tracking device that I plan to use in a few projects.

Model: TK102-1

Image

Manual and specs

Code: Select all

http://www.dagamagps.com/manual/T-102.pdf
I am currently writing a server for it, as it can send the position and device status over the Internet.
I am planning to have the server save all the positions, and then I will put all the positions on a Google Map using the Google Maps API.
Green dot for current position, and blue dot for older ones :)

Anyway so here's some code I've been playing with :)

http://code.suck-o.com/42427" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also bought an extra strong battery for the device so that it can hold out for about a month :D

EDIT: more to come

They are usually very expensive, but I read a review about this and it has a lot going for it.
It's pretty small and cheap.
I paid about $40 for mine, plus $30 for an extra battery.

The device is a lot smaller than I first though

The upper coins are Euro, and the down left one is a Danish crown while the down right one is a Swedish crown.

My boss has promised to sponsor me with a SIM card, but haven't gotten it yet so haven't been able to play with it :P

I was able to use my phone GPS and a boat GPS to compare - they had identical readings. I was also able to GPS a sunken boat on a boat trip. On my GPS I was tracked by no less than 10 out of 11 satellites - and that made it possible to locate me to within 1-2 feet of that sunken wreck.

When I turn on my phone and the GPS you can see the GPS work - first it locates the main cellco tower you are on, then about 15 seconds later (I guess you better hang up the phone before 30 seconds when pranking the FBI now) the GPs will have my position - right down to the direction I am facing.

If the phone did not have GPS - it would be triangulated by cellco towers - measuring the distance you are from each by signal strength. Knowing that walls and buildings can effect signal strength - these 'locations' can be off by 10 to 50 feet from your actual location.
But with GPS using overhead satellites - and more than 3 - 4 locators - you can get VERY accurate pin point locations. I guess the .mil has perfected the GPS guided technology for smart bombs to hit you directly in the head.

I am looking at finding a small GPS device I can use as a locator - for packages, cars, or even my dog.

The smart phone also has an app for viewing wifi cameras - I will try warviewing and playing with hidden cameras.

The version 2 of the one I bought is highly recommended.
It has gotten really great reviews.
Chinese crap, but hey, it's rather cheap and it works :)

I will write more about my device as soon as my vacation is over ^^
