well im not sure if the PS2 has a soft mod ability like the xbox, but the likely approach is to get a mod chip and flash the firmware of the ps2 to something different
check google for ps2 soft mod etc....

i dont know much about it but even if we soft mod a ps2, wont it require a special server version of the game?

About the most i've heard done to a ps2 was linux being installed.
I would start with that, just google around.

If you can run linux on a PS2, you can certainly run apache and php.

Sony sold a "Linux Kit" for the PS2 including the OS (based on RedHat) and hardware (ethernet adapter, etc.), but due to a lack of sales it's not available in the US anymore since 2003. so the only ways to get it would be by import or checking on ebay.
