I'd have to say a 7/10. Upgrade that processor, but stick with AMD ;)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

you can get a cheap cpu from newegg that will smoke that one. i hooked a friend of mine up with a 2.5 dual for like 70 bucks. sweeet stuff. and you can get a better gpu for cheap as well!

7/10 ! i DISAGREE

if you want a real truthful report then I give it a 4/10. Here is why

DDR2 is no longer top of the line its old stuff; technology speaking
7600Gt is old as well and if it is a AGP card then even worse
CPU is of low grade.
HDD well if is is serial 3Gbit/s then it is possiably the best thing you got.

I am not slamming the PC. This is my professional opinion that is all.

Depends on what you intend to do i guess but i still give you a 4/10

To mee it seems intel still bitch slaps AMD in the race of efficiency

hm, this is almost as my system:
AMD XP 2500+
2 GB DDR RAM
nvidia 7900GS

when I compare it with a buddy's Core Duo system with a 600 bucks g-card I really have to say my system is still good....I mean, when I look at his system performance there is no "wow, it's sooo fast" moment for me. of course he can play the newest games with higher settings...but that's pretty all.
look around for a XP 2500+ CPU, those already had the Barton core, it will improve your system performance a lot. also optimize your OS by disabling all unneeded services for example.
I give your system a 5/10 because it already uses DDR2 ("already" in context with the XP CPU).

What are you talking about? In my experience, there is no difference at all.

Perhaps in your experiences, but I can say without a doubt that PCI is so much faster that AGP. It is a matter of technology fact.

Code: Select all

Advantages of PCI-Express

The benefit of PCI Express is that it can handle a greater data throughput than an AGP slot. PCI Express offers performance of up to 4 times faster than the fastest AGP slot. It's relatively new technology, and it isn't being used to its full potential yet. Although, we predict that games released in the next 1-2 years will make full use of PCI Express technology.

Another advantage of PCI Express is you can connect more than one video card to your computer for extra performance. This is impossible with AGP, since a motherboard can only ever have one AGP slot.

Still i give it a 4/10 hell i give my PC a 6/10 and i have the following

2, 100 - Gig serial 3gbit/s in RAID
AMD - 4000+ 64 bit
DDR3 - 4 gigs PC 10600
PCI - 8800 GT with GDDR3
eletegroup motherboard
Running Vista 64  and Fedora core 4

The only good thing I have going is my RAM and Video Card the rest is cheap.

if you'd look at performance/$ without going top of the line, to mee it seems that it's AMD that still bitchslaps Intel. A athlon 64 6000x2 beats any intel cpu equally priced.
floodhound2 wrote: DDR2 is no longer top of the line its old stuff; technology speaking
well it might not be top of the line but Tom's hardware did a search for the fastest memory you could put in your pc, and ddr2 with decent cas values still beats any ddr3 module.

So i would give it a 5.5-6/10

In case anyone wanted to know, this is my setup:

Amd athlon 64 6000x2
Nvidia 7900gs with 512ddr3 memory (choose that one since it was the best passive cooled gpu i could get at that moment)
2x1 gb OCZ DDR2, PC6400 memory cas 4 (exactly what Tom's hardware suggests as the fastest memory available atm)
2x300gb hitachi deskstar sata hd's
You cant spell slaughter without laughter.

A 2 out of 10? Harsh.. I guess i should explain my rating a little bit.

First off, i prefer AMD processors because they consume less power, and have a better price-power ratio. Also, Even though AGP is not the best out there, it is still the standard for graphic cards today. Pci-e is still working it's way in. The setup he has there is still capable of functioning as a half-way decently powerful rig that can run most games and programs easily.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

i think his comp could def be upgraded. its not a bad computer. i mean shit i started off with a pentium 3 running 800mhz and 256m of ram. you can still learn off of a beast like that. but parts are getting cheaper thats fo sho. drop 200 into it and it would definatly get the job done!

my current specs:(in case you were curious)

intel t7700 (mobile dual core running 2.4)
250g hdd (only 5400 rpm :( )
nvidia geforce 8400m gs (ram is varied. vista says 128m xp says 512)
14 inch lcd
intel pro wirles 4956 agn

its the best i have. but i do have a server that does more than i need. all it has to do is host some files and back my stuff up.

1.8ghz amd sempron
1g of ram
500g hdd

simple enough ha ha

Since intel released their 45nm processors, the power consumption has dropped dramatically. Right now their best price/performance CPU (E8400, or at least it was their best price/performance back in January when I bought mine) runs at 65 Watts.

To be honest I can't tell you what to get until you tell me what you plan on using your computer for the most.
