New hardrive-new problem

Post by Lyecdevf »

I bought a new HD. I put in into the computer, turned it on and go the, "Disk error, insert system disk...."

Now I tried to install linux on the new one. I disconected the old one just in case but it gave me the error that it does not detect any HD's on the comp.

Now what I think the problem is when I went to put the HD in I think I accidentally hit the battery on the motherboard. It did not fall out but I think there was a loss of electricity. I think that caused the BIOS to reset. So maybe there is some thing wrong with the BIOS. At least I hope so because I would not like to buy a new motherboard.

What else could the problem be? I have tried several things already and none of them work!
We will either find a way, or make one.

Try the same old stuff and report back.

1. Did it POST?
2. If so make changes in the BIOS and reboot. Did the changes stay in BIOS memory?

Report back soon ill help as much as I can

IDE or SATA? is the HDD not found in BIOS at all or just in the Linux boot procedure?

They are both SATA. Neither the BIOS nor the linux can find them! :? :x

Did you make sure that the SATA cable is plugged in correctly including the power cable? Sometimes you need an adapter fro the power because the power supply is a bit older and don't have a SATA power plug.

If so then check the BIOS settings to look for SATA for booting order.

Try using fdisk to format the drive first. I remember sometimes getting the same error some time back now when using windows 98. You might need a windows 98 start up disk as well. Also as floody said provide the POST results. With windows you can also right click my computer and goto manage and and then goto disk management. You can also format the partition from there.

Good luck

I fixed it and all by my self! :D  :) It was in the BIOS!

Now I have two HD's. :P

Kind of expected the other one to become part of the C dirve and add to it the GB's of space! Or at least have its own drive! :? It does say that it is functioning and every thing. Now I want to install some linux on it. I wonder how could I pull this off. I would need to use Grub am I right! Going to try this out today!

Thanks for the help. I could not of have done it with out you!

Hey congrats my man! Also great reporting up in the forums. I like it when a problem is fixed then reported back in the forums as well. It keeps us from wondering what the hell happened.

Great job.!
