All data on a 1TB drive unreadable
I know it doesn't help - but from a network solutions POV, I would recommend that if company X builds up a database of X amount of MB - you have to build a plan to backup/store that data - on more than one HDD.
Regardless of data amount it should always be backed up else where, buy another HDD, copy, and then put that HDD away.

well, I am using RAID5 on my system, you need 4 HDDs for it and you have 3/4 of the HDD space available....if you use 4x500GB HDDs you have 1500GB available for example, the rest is used for the parity data.
imo RAID5 is the best option, it's fast AND secure.
if 4 HDDs are too expensive you could use RAID1 with 2 HDDs.

well, best is of course when all the HDDs have the same size....because the available space in a RAID5 for example is:
so when using 3x1 TB HDDs and 1x80 GB HDD you would only have 240 GB available.
if using 1 SATA and 1 SATA2 HDD the max. speed will also be limited to the slower one of course...
