@b_b: wow thanks for the education! now i understand! hehe!
@all: is there anyone here who uses a machine loaded with 16GB or RAM? i heard from a friend that says he has a friend with 16GB of RAM. i do not know if he was just joshing or sumthin. is this possible now for normal desktop computer? is there a single 4GB module or more coz if he says 16GB of ram it might be possible that the dude has 4 slots each loaded with 4GB modules or maybe 2 slots with 8GB if that is possible.
I have...
Sure you can have a motherboard supporting 16GB of ram, there are some that support 32GB ram also, but most are server type boards so, I'm not sure of any home computer system having 16Gb ram, but there are some that are certainly capable...
I read that Samsung is using lasers to create 1 X 4GB sticks of ram, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a minute before they go commercial and become publicly available. question is would the cost be worth the performance difference.
For that average user, I doubt it.

server RAM modules have also the same sizes (memory I mean) as desktop ones, the only difference is that (at least on professional servers) modules with ECC (error-correcting code) are used...this improves the system stability a lot but the modules are of course more expensive too.
the amount of RAM servers (can) use is because of the bigger amount of slots on server mainboards:

hehe, and that's just a medium class server board. before looking at the next pic best place a bucket under your mouth:
4 CPU sockets...so when you pack the board with the max CPUs (4x 6-core Opteron 8400) and the max. possible RAM you end up with a system that has, and now fasten your seatbelt:
- 24 cores
- 256 GB RAM (ok, 128 in practice as long as no 8GB modules are available)
damn, now even I start to drool....
