I just write HTML from memory.

It's an easy language to learn. Google tutorials for it.

I used it while learning HTML, but i suggest notepad 2, if you're on windows. It has great syntax highlighting and a bunch of other awesome features.

I use Dreamweaver but its not free. I also, now that im more experienced, like notepad2, it is great not graphical like DW but it certinally does the trick once you start to really learn HTML.

i like Dreamweaver, not just for the designer feature but also for the organizational features, i can manage my website on the spot and upload to my server within the program, i can also easily organize snippets i want to remember, not to mention letting me save snippets of code for later user, thats just my opinion, its not a free program, but there is free trial which allows you to use all the features...
