A remote desktop is just an application that works remotely, this is mainly under adminstartive applications and many server applications. Remote desktop is recommened if you have a computer connected to a network in which one computer acts as a server and the other as a client.

I would say it is mainly used for well... remote adminastation. For example, I company needs a deadicated computer that they can share files between. Lets say Tom wants to acess the printer connected to this one big giant super computer like computer referred too as a server computer. The server computer allows the users to acess the applications and services provided on that machine. So if Tom wants those recording of what happened and it was on that Server, he and Betty can both acess these files. This is when a Remote Desktop comes into play. You need to remotely acess those files.
